Vanur Assembly constituency is located in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu and is reserved for Scheduled Castes. The seat has traditionally witnessed a direct contest between the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, with the AIADMK holding a stronger edge in multiple election cycles.
In the 2016 Assembly elections, Vanur had a total of 2,21,269 electors, of which 1,74,428 valid votes were polled. AIADMK’s Chakrapani M won the seat with 64,167 votes, defeating DMK’s Mydili R, who secured 53,944 votes. The margin of victory stood at 10,223 votes.
Earlier, in 2011, the constituency had 1,96,094 electors and recorded 1,58,671 valid votes. AIADMK’s Janakiraman I registered a decisive win with 88,834 votes, defeating DMK’s Pushparaj S by a margin of 25,138 votes.
In 2006, AIADMK’s Ganapathy N secured 59,978 votes to win the seat, defeating Pattali Makkal Katchi’s Soundararajan N by 4,036 votes. Ganapathy had also won in 2001 with 68,421 votes, underlining AIADMK’s sustained presence in the constituency over successive terms.
