Ponneri Assembly constituency, designated as Constituency No. 002, is located in the northern part of Tiruvallur district and is among Tamil Nadu’s strategically significant and rapidly evolving seats. While its proximity to Chennai has accelerated urban growth, the constituency continues to retain its rural character, with agriculture still playing a key role alongside expanding industrial and logistics activity.Historically known for paddy cultivation, water bodies and traditional weaving communities, Ponneri has increasingly become part of North Chennai’s growth corridor, driven by improved road connectivity, port-led development and the expansion of industrial infrastructure. Key issues in the constituency include acute shortage of drinking and irrigation water in interior villages, pollution from industries in the Ennore–Manali corridor, poor maintenance of roads in panchayat areas, coastal erosion affecting fishing communities, delays in upgrading government hospitals, shortage of government schools and hostels, and rising unemployment among rural youth. In the 2021 Assembly elections, Congress candidate Durai Chandrasekar won the seat with 1,07,885 votes, defeating AIADMK’s Pon Raja, who secured 88,557 votes, by a margin of 19,328 votes. Earlier, in the 2016 polls, the constituency had 2,50,403 electors, with 1,97,648 valid votes polled. AIADMK candidate Balaraman P won the seat with 95,979 votes, defeating DMK’s Parimalam K (Dr), who secured 76,643 votes, by a margin of 19,336 votes.
