Avadi, Assembly Constituency No. 6, spans north‑west Chennai and parts of Tiruvallur district, making it a constituency of high strategic value. It is characterised by prominent defence establishments, closely packed residential localities, industrial employment zones, and fast‑paced suburban expansion. Widely recognised for the Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) and other ordnance units, Avadi combines the relative stability of a defence ecosystem with growing civilian‑led urban development. Persistent local issues include waterlogging during monsoon due to drainage overflow, heavy traffic around the railway station and defence entry points, poor condition of interior and neighbourhood roads, drinking water scarcity in select localities, gaps in solid waste collection and disposal, pollution in and around industrial pockets, and an increasing burden on government hospitals. In the 2021 Assembly elections, DMK’s S. M. Nasar won the Avadi seat with 1,50,287 votes, defeating AIADMK’s K. Pandiarajan, who secured 95,012 votes, by a margin of 55,275 votes. Earlier, in the 2016 polls, AIADMK’s Pandia Rajan K won the seat with 1,08,064 votes, defeating DMK’s Nasar S. M., who secured 1,06,669 votes, by a narrow margin of 1,395 votes.
