Palani Assembly constituency, located in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu, forms part of the Dindigul Lok Sabha constituency. The constituency has a mixed demographic profile, with about 58.92 per cent of its population classified as urban and 41.08 per cent rural according to the 2011 Census. Scheduled Castes account for around 25.61 per cent of the population, while Scheduled Tribes constitute about 1.48 per cent.
In the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly election, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won the seat with I.P. Senthil Kumar securing 1,08,566 votes. He defeated the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s K. Ravi Manoharan, who polled 78,510 votes. The DMK secured 52.87 per cent of the vote, while the AIADMK received 38.23 per cent.
Historically, Palani has witnessed electoral contests primarily between the DMK and the AIADMK, with both parties alternating in terms of electoral dominance. In recent years, however, the DMK has consolidated its position in Assembly elections, with IP Senthil Kumar winning the seat in both 2016 and 2021.
The constituency is currently represented in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly by IP Senthil Kumar of the DMK, while the Dindigul Lok Sabha constituency is represented in Parliament by R Sachithanantham of the CPI(M).
