Gummidipoondi Assembly constituency, located in Tiruvallur district and designated as Constituency No. 1, holds strategic importance as one of Tamil Nadu’s northern border seats. Positioned at the state’s entry point, the constituency reflects a blend of traditional agrarian life and rapid industrial growth, driven by improved highway connectivity and the expansion of manufacturing corridors over the past two decades.
Once characterised by paddy fields, water bodies and rural settlements, Gummidipoondi has seen steady urban and industrial transformation, emerging as a key commercial zone due to its proximity to neighbouring states.
Key issues in the constituency include industrial pollution affecting air, water and soil quality, persistent water shortages in rural and interior villages, poor maintenance of panchayat roads, accident-prone stretches along National Highway-16, and inadequate government healthcare infrastructure.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, DMK’s T J Govindarajan won the seat with 1,26,452 votes, defeating PMK’s Prakash M, who secured 75,514 votes, by a margin of 50,938 votes.
Earlier, in the 2016 polls, the constituency had 2,60,912 electors, with 2,14,348 valid votes polled. AIADMK candidate Vijayakumar K S secured victory with 89,332 votes, defeating DMK’s Sekar C H, who polled 65,937 votes, by a margin of 23,395 votes.
