Villupuram Assembly constituency is located in Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu and has alternated between the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam over the past two decades, reflecting a largely bipolar political contest.
In the 2016 Assembly elections, the constituency had 2,47,327 electors, with 1,88,964 valid votes polled. AIADMK’s Shanmugam C Ve secured victory with 69,421 votes, defeating Indian Union Muslim League’s Ameer Abbas S M by a margin of 22,291 votes.
In 2011, with 2,09,392 electors and 1,73,050 valid votes, AIADMK’s Shanmugam C V retained the seat, securing 90,304 votes and defeating DMK’s K Ponmudy by 12,097 votes.
Earlier, the DMK held sway in the constituency. In 2006, K Ponmudy won with 72,462 votes, defeating AIADMK’s Pasupathy R by 9,748 votes. He had also won in 2001 by a slender margin of 2,205 votes and earlier in 1996 by a wide margin of 41,586 votes, marking a period of sustained DMK dominance before the seat shifted back to the AIADMK in 2011.
