Coimbatore (South) Assembly constituency, located in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu, is part of the Coimbatore Lok Sabha constituency. The seat has a fully urban demographic profile, with 100 per cent of its population classified as urban as per the 2011 Census. Scheduled Castes account for about 12.75 per cent of the population, while Scheduled Tribes constitute around 0.06 per cent.
The constituency has emerged as one of the most closely contested seats in the state. In the 2021 Assembly election, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Vanathi Srinivasan secured 53,209 votes, defeating Kamal Haasan of Makkal Needhi Maiam, who polled 51,481 votes.
Historically, Coimbatore (South) has seen shifting political preferences. In the last six major elections, the AIADMK and the BJP have each led the vote share twice, while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Indian National Congress have led once each. The presence of emerging parties such as Makkal Needhi Maiam has also made the constituency more competitive in recent years.
The seat is currently represented in the Tamil Nadu Assembly by Vanathi Srinivasan of the Bharatiya Janata Party, while the Coimbatore Lok Sabha constituency is represented by Ganapathy Rajkumar P of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.
