Karur Assembly constituency, located in Karur district of Tamil Nadu, forms part of the Karur Lok Sabha constituency. According to the 2011 Census estimates, the constituency is largely urban in character, with about 82 per cent of the population living in urban areas and 18 per cent in rural areas. Scheduled Castes account for 15.57 per cent of the population and Scheduled Tribes about 0.06 per cent.
In the 2021 Assembly election, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s V Senthilbalaji won the seat by securing 1,01,757 votes, or 49.09 per cent of the vote share. He defeated the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s MR Vijayabhaskar, who received 89,309 votes. The AIADMK secured 43.08 per cent of the vote, while the Naam Tamilar Katchi polled 3.53 per cent.
Historically, the constituency has witnessed contests largely between the AIADMK and the DMK. V Senthilbalaji of the AIADMK won the seat in 2006 and again in 2011. The AIADMK retained the constituency in 2016 with MR Vijayabhaskar, who defeated the Congress candidate by a narrow margin. The DMK captured the seat in the 2021 Assembly election with V Senthilbalaji.
The constituency is currently represented in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly by V Senthilbalaji of the DMK, while the Karur Lok Sabha constituency is represented in Parliament by Congress’ Jothimani.
