Jayankondam Assembly constituency is located in Ariyalur district and falls under the Chidambaram Lok Sabha seat. Historically, the constituency has been a competitive ground for the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), AIADMK, and DMK. In the 2021 Assembly elections, DMK’s Ka. So. Ka. Kannan won the seat by securing 99,529 votes. He defeated PMK’s K. Balu, who secured 94,077 votes. The margin of victory stood at 5,452 votes. In the 2016 Assembly elections, the constituency had a total of 2,50,259 electors. AIADMK’s J. K. N. Ramajeyalingam won the seat with 75,672 votes, defeating PMK candidate J. Guru (alias) Gurunathan, who secured 52,738 votes. The margin of victory was 22,934 votes. In the 2011 Assembly elections, PMK’s J. Guru (alias) Gurunathan won the seat with 92,739 votes, defeating AIADMK’s P. Elavazhagan, who received 77,601 votes. The margin of victory stood at 15,138 votes.
