The Silchar Assembly constituency is one of the 126 seats in the Assam Legislative Assembly and is numbered 118. It is a general category seat, not reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs) or Scheduled Tribes (STs). Key political players in the state include the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM). The constituency falls under the Silchar Lok Sabha segment.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, BJP’s Dipayan Chakraborty secured victory by defeating Congress candidate Tamal Kanti Banik with a margin of 37,578 votes. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, BJP’s Parimal Suklabaidya won the Silchar parliamentary seat, defeating Congress candidate Surya Kanta Sarkar by a margin of 2,64,311 votes.
Located in Assam’s Cachar district, the Silchar Assembly constituency is largely urban in character. Around 85% of its population resides in densely populated town areas, with the remaining population spread across semi-urban and peri-urban localities.
According to Election Commission data, the constituency had a total of 2,34,821 voters in the 2021 Assembly elections. This included 1,15,715 male voters, 1,19,098 female voters, and eight third-gender voters. A total of 1,780 valid postal votes were cast, while the number of service voters stood at 626, comprising 610 men and 16 women.
