Rongonadi Assembly constituency is one of the 126 constituencies in the Assam Legislative Assembly, created as a new seat in the 2023 delimitation exercise. It is located in Biswanath district in north Assam and falls under the Sonitpur Lok Sabha segment. The constituency takes its name from the Rongonadi river, a Brahmaputra tributary, and covers rural, flood-prone terrain with an agrarian economy and tea garden communities.
The main political parties in Assam include the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Bodoland People's Front (BPF), United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM).
As a newly created constituency, Rongonadi does not carry a direct 2021 result. Adjacent Biswanath in 2021 was won by BJP's Promod Borthakur with 71,201 votes by 9,210 votes over INC, and Behali (SC) by BJP's Ranjit Dutta by 29,839 votes. In 2026, BJP's Rishiraj Hazarika contests against Congress's Joyonto Khaund for this new north Assam seat.
The 2026 Assam Assembly elections will test Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's BJP-led government, which swept to power with a comfortable majority in 2021. With the opposition Congress-AIUDF combine seeking to consolidate anti-incumbency sentiment, every constituency will be a crucial battleground in deciding whether the state returns a second consecutive BJP government.
