Baokhungri Assembly constituency is one of the 126 constituencies in the Assam Legislative Assembly, created as a new seat in the 2023 delimitation exercise. It is located in the Kokrajhar district area within the Bodoland Territorial Region and falls under the Kokrajhar Lok Sabha segment. The constituency is drawn from the Bodo-majority belt of western Assam, with an economy centred on agriculture and forest produce. The main political parties in Assam include the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Bodoland People's Front (BPF), United People's Party Liberal (UPPL), and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM). As a newly created constituency, Baokhungri does not carry forward a direct 2021 election result. The broader Kokrajhar Lok Sabha belt was dominated in 2021 by UPPL, with adjacent Gossaigaon being won by UPPL's Jiron Basumatary and Kokrajhar East by UPPL's Lawrence Islary by 20,095 votes. In 2026, BJP's Rupam Chandra Roy and Congress's Sapali Marak contest the inaugural election in this new seat. The 2026 Assam Assembly elections will test Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's BJP-led government, which swept to power with a comfortable majority in 2021. With the opposition Congress-AIUDF combine seeking to consolidate anti-incumbency sentiment, every constituency will be a crucial battleground in deciding whether the state returns a second consecutive BJP government.
