Lakhipur, located in Assam’s Cachar district, is an Assembly constituency in the Barak Valley and also serves as the headquarters of the Lakhipur subdivision. It is a general (unreserved) seat and forms part of the Silchar Lok Sabha constituency.
Formed in 1951, the constituency has witnessed 15 Assembly elections and one bypoll. The Congress has dominated the seat over the years, winning it 12 times. Veteran leader Dinesh Prasad Goala won the constituency seven times — in 1983, 1985, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006 and 2011. His son, Rajdeep Goala, later carried forward the legacy by winning the 2014 by-election following his father’s death, and again in 2016. The BJP secured its first win in the constituency in 2021.
Dinesh Prasad Goala initially won as an Independent and later continued his victories as a Congress candidate until 2011. In that election, he defeated BJP’s Reena Singh by a margin of 30,078 votes. After his passing in 2014, Rajdeep Goala won the bypoll by defeating BJP candidate Sanjay Kumar Thakur by 9,837 votes. Rajdeep secured 39,159 votes, while Thakur got 29,322 votes. AIUDF’s Mukesh Pandey polled 22,590 votes out of a total of 94,357 valid votes cast in the by-election.
