VIJAYAWADA: Deputy chief minister of Andhra Pradesh Pawan Kalyan’s recent promise to protect the “Atma Gauravam” (self-respect) of Jana Sena cadre despite being part of the ruling NDA alliance has rekindled hopes among party workers that Jana Sena is preparing to claim a much larger space in Andhra Pradesh politics. His remarks, delivered during a meeting celebrating the completion of 21 lakh party memberships, were seen not merely as an emotional appeal to the cadre but as a carefully crafted political signal about Jana Sena’s future role within the alliance and the state’s evolving political landscape. In an emotionally charged speech lasted for nearly 80 minutes, Pawan Kalyan touched upon nationalism, party ideology, organisational structure and opposition to appeasement politics. However, the sharpest political message came when he openly acknowledged emerging discomfort within sections of Jana Sena cadre over alliance dynamics. Assuring workers that their dignity and political identity would never be compromised, he promised corrective measures wherever necessary. The statement immediately triggered intense political discussion, with many viewing it as an attempt to reassure cadre that Jana Sena would not remain a secondary force in the coalition indefinitely.
Political analysts believe Pawan Kalyan’s role in state’s politics has undergone a major transformation since the 2024 elections. While he was initially seen as the architect who brought the TDP and BJP together to defeat YSRCP, many now argue that his contribution extended far beyond alliance-building. They believe he successfully engineered a broader social and political realignment that altered Andhra Pradesh’s traditional caste equations. For decades, Andhra politics revolved largely around two dominant social blocs. The Congress traditionally depended on the Reddy community, while the rise of NT Rama Rao and the Telugu Desam Party in the 1980s shifted political power towards the Kamma community under the slogan of “Telugu Vari Atma Gauravam.” Despite being one of the state’s largest communities, the Kapus repeatedly failed to emerge as a stable independent political force. Pawan Kalyan attempted to change that political reality through a different approach. Rather than consolidating only Kapu identity politics, he consistently promoted broader social harmony and cross-community alliances. In the Godavari districts, considered the core of Kapu politics, he urged leaders to behave as an inclusive “big brother” community rather than an isolated political bloc. His outreach extended to Setti Balijas, Thurpu Kapus, Balijas and sections of the Relli community, while his opposition to GO 217 in Narsapuram helped JanaSena gain support among fishermen communities across coastal Andhra. During the sensitive Konaseema unrest in 2022, he avoided exploiting social tensions politically and instead projected himself as a balancing force. Perhaps the most significant political development during this phase was the coming together of Kapu and Kamma communities, historically viewed as occupying opposite sides of Andhra politics. Analysts believe this alignment became the backbone of the NDA alliance’s massive victory in 2024. The election results reflected the scale of that transformation. YSRCP, which won 151 Assembly seats in 2019 and appeared politically invincible, was reduced to just 11 seats in 2024. In contrast, the NDA alliance swept 164 out of 175 Assembly constituencies. For Pawan Kalyan, the alliance has consistently been projected as a partnership aimed at rebuilding Andhra Pradesh after years of financial stress and administrative uncertainty. He repeatedly argued that Chandrababu Naidu’s administrative experience and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership offered the stability needed for AP’s recovery. However, recent political developments in TDP has sparked fresh debate as Jana Sena cadre fear their party’s contribution to the alliance may gradually be sidelined. It is against this backdrop that Pawan Kalyan’s invocation of “Atma Gauravam” has acquired deeper political significance. By framing alliance relations around dignity, recognition and mutual respect, Pawan Kalyan appears to be reminding allies that political coalitions survive not merely through electoral arithmetic but through balanced partnerships. For Jana Sena cadre, his latest message has revived hopes that the party is preparing not just to remain an alliance partner, but to emerge as a decisive political force in state’s future.
