KGMU submits probe report on Rs 2.5 cr medicine scam

Lucknow: King George’s Medical University (KGMU) has submitted to state govt investigation report on the alleged Rs 2.5-crore medicine scam in its urology department and allegations that ophthalmology patients were being directed to purchase lenses and medicines from select private medical stores.The inquiries were initiated after state govt sought detailed explanation on both matters. Acting on directions of deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak, additional chief secretary (medical education) Amit Kumar Ghosh had asked KGMU to furnish a comprehensive report. Govt-level committee comprising secretary and director general of medical education and special secretary Ravi Ranjan was subsequently constituted to examine the cases.In the urology case, the probe focused on alleged misuse of medicines procured under the Asadhya Yojana, a scheme meant for treatment of serious illnesses. Investigators examined the procurement and distribution of medicines, role of doctors and allegations that expensive cancer drugs were issued in names of fictitious patients.Second inquiry examined allegations that patients in ophthalmology department were being advised to purchase lenses and medicines from outside shops instead of availing facilities available within KGMU.
Records, prescriptions, surgery-related documents and departmental procedures were scrutinised.A five-member KGMU committee collected statements from officials and staff and examined relevant documents before preparing the reports. Sources said the university submitted a report of around three pages along with replies to 20 points raised by govt. Govt will now review the findings and decide on disciplinary action.
