TIRUPATI: A Bengaluru-based techie and his parents were arrested by the Chinna Chowk police in Kadapa district after the girl, who was supposed to get married to Shahjahan in Aug this year, died by suicide.
According to Chinna Chowk SI Prathap Reddy, the girl, Rehana, got engaged to Shahjahan in Feb this year and they were scheduled to get married in Aug. While Rehana and Shahjahan got along well initially and used to have long conversations over the phone, his behaviour suddenly changed about three weeks ago and he began pressurising Rehana to call off the marriage.
According to the girl's father Nadendla Raja, Shajahan reportedly told Rehana that he already had a relationship with four other women and that he wasn't getting any "feelings" for her.
Stating that he agreed to the wedding because he was being pressurised by his parents, he asked her to call off the marriage.
Rehana, who slipped into a depression, committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling at her house in Patel Road locality of Kadapa on April 21.
She left behind a 12-page suicide note, in which she explained her ordeal and the manner in which she was driven to take the extreme step by Shahjahan.
Based on a complaint lodged by her father Nadendla Raja, police registered a case and arrested Shahjahan and his parents, M Veeraiah and M Waheeda from Proddatur, on charges of abetment to suicide. The accused were produced before the local court and sent to judicial remand.
