T'puram: A 36-year-old scheduled tribe man allegedly attempted suicide by setting himself ablaze outside a police station on Monday morning after being summoned in connection with a domestic dispute.
The victim, Suresh of Kuriottumala Adivasi Unnati in Piravanthur, sustained severe burn injuries and is undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of medical college hospital.
Police said Suresh and his wife Chellamma (24) had been asked to appear at the station following a complaint she filed over a family dispute that occurred three days ago. As he approached the station around 10.30am, Suresh allegedly poured kerosene over himself lit himself on fire.
Hearing the commotion, police personnel and bystanders rushed to the spot and doused the flames. He was initially taken to Punalur taluk hospital and later shifted to MCH.
Police said the woman had earlier complained of Suresh's harassment towards her and their children. The couple has three children, including a two-month-old baby.
Relatives alleged that he had a history of domestic abuse and had attempted suicide earlier as well. TNN
