NAVI MUMBAI: A 23-year-old Navi Mumbai resident was arrested on Monday for allegedly strangling her baby five days after giving birth. She told cops she had learned of her pregnancy only in the seventh month and couldn’t raise a second child.
Satish Chabukswar, inspector (crime), Turbhe police, said Ashwini Chandanshive said she already had an 18-month-old girl to care for. She claimed she approached a gynaecologist to medically terminate her pregnancy but the doctor refused, pointing out the gestation was already in the 28th week.
Chandanshive gave birth at a civic hospital in Vashi on June 3. She was discharged four days later and she moved in with her sister-in-law, Ashwini Sainath Suryatale. Her husband, who works as a driver, was away.
On June 8, Suryatale returned from work to find the newborn motionless. Chandanshive then allegedly confessed to strangling him.
