BIJNOR: A 24-year-old Dalit man from UP’s Bijnor was allegedly murdered by his wife’s family members and aides after the intercaste couple decided to opt for a court marriage against their wishes. Three accused, including the woman’s brother, were arrested on Monday night. On the night of April 29, Atar Singh, the woman’s brother along with his people -- from another caste -- intercepted the victim Gulshan Kumar of Syohara’s Jujhela area, near Mahmoodpur railway tracks in Bijnor and pushed him in front of a running train. They wanted to make it look like a case of suicide, police said.Kumar and Singh’s sister had been in a relationship for four years before they got married six months ago. Angered over the perceived damage to their social reputation, Singh and others plotted to kill Kumar.Bijnor SP Abhishek Jha said, “An FIR was registered against the accused under BNS sections 103(1) (murder), 3(5) (criminal acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), 191(2) (rioting) and 140(1) (kidnapping) along with sections 3(2)/5 of SC/ST Act. Raids are underway to nab the other accused.”During interrogation, Singh said that his sister had been in a relationship with Kumar for the past few years and the couple had recently married, “hurting their family’s reputation within the society”.
