Madurai: Special midnight Masses were held across churches on Saturday to mark the end of Lent and usher in Easter, which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The faithful, who had observed Lent since Ash Wednesday, attended services late into the night as part of the Easter vigil. At St Mary's Cathedral, devotees gathered for midnight Mass, while similar services were held at St Valanar Church, St Paul's Church, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and Our Lady of the Rosary Church, among others, including Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine and Our Lady of Velankanni Shrine.
In Church of South India churches, Easter services began early on Sunday, with special worship from around 4.30 am till sunrise. Congregations sang hymns and took part in candlelight services to welcome Easter.
Following the services, devotees received blessings, greeted one another and shared cakes as part of the celebrations.
