Kolkata: West Bengal Medical Council (WBMC) has exonerated surgeon Sarfaraz Jajil Baig from charges of medical negligence.
The verdict comes two-and-a-half months after the council framed charges against him on finding prima facie medical negligence based on a complaint lodged by the wife of a deceased 42-year-old man.
The case relates to the death of
Aman Chopra, a Camac Street resident who was admitted to Belle Vue Clinic in Feb 2024 with acute abdominal pain, It was later detected appendicitis. His condition deteriorated after surgical intervention. In the medical negligence complaint lodged by Chopra's wife Simran, he underwent a second surgery in the same hospital. As his condition kept sinking, Chopra was flown to a Hyderabad hospital where he died later. TOI reported WBMC's initial findings and charges framed against Baig on April 3.
The complainant and Baig were summoned to depose before the council on May 7. During the hearing, Baig replied to all the charges framed against him.
The council on May 20 decided that the charges brought against Baig were not substantiated and he was not found guilty of professional misconduct. tnn
