Cargo terminal to come up along Sabari line? Railways to conduct feasibility study
Sabari rail line is expected to have Ro-Ro services
Kochi: In a significant push to the long-delayed Sabari project, railways will conduct a feasibility study to set up a cargo terminal at the proposed Thodupuzha station. Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the development in a letter to Idukki MP Dean Kuriakose, stating that the issue regarding land acquisition for the terminal has been sent for “official examination”.The move follows joint memorandums submitted to the railway minister by various organizations, including Sabari Railway Central Action Council (SRCAC), Kerala Pineapple Growers Association and Karshaka Vedi, through Union minister George Kurien and the MP.The proposed cargo terminal, coupled with roll-on/roll-off (RoRo) train services, aims to revolutionize logistics in the region by drastically lowering transportation costs. The facility will enable swift, cost-effective transport of cash crops and industrial goods to lucrative north Indian markets.“The region is a major agricultural and industrial hub, with nearby Vazhakulam being the largest pineapple market in the country, dispatching an average of 100 truckloads daily. Additionally, Perumbavoor and its surrounding regions house around 540 plywood manufacturing units, which collectively transport 250 truckloads of products to northern states every day.
High-value local produce like pepper, cardamom and rambutan will also benefit from faster transit times,” said SRCAC secretary Jijo Joseph Panachiani. While the project promises a massive economic boost to central Kerala, the Sabari rail project’s current alignment lacks provisions for a cargo terminal. Furthermore, strict regulations have so far prevented private enterprises from acquiring land near the proposed Thodupuzha station site.To bypass the hurdles, railways may look at developing the terminal through public-private partnership models, a strategy currently being deployed across the country to expand freight infrastructure. The terminal represents a lucrative opportunity to secure substantial freight revenue, railway sources said, pointing to the feasibility study. After languishing in the backburner for years, the recent resurgence of activities surrounding the Sabari rail project has revived hopes for the project execution. By tapping into the massive local output of timber and agricultural produce, the cargo terminal could ultimately make the entire Sabari railway line highly profitable while driving regional economic growth.
