Grandmaster from Coimbatore bags two golds at Commonwealth Chess Championship

Coimbatore: Grandmaster P Iniyan from the city, won two gold medals at the Commonwealth Chess Championship which concluded in Sri Lanka on Tuesday.The championship featured three formats- Rapid, Blitz and Classical. Iniyan topped both the Rapid and Blitz sections, scoring an impressive 6.5 points out of seven games in each format.The Classical title was won by GM Mitrabha Guha, adding to India’s strong performance in the tournament. India also secured several other medals. In the Rapid section GM Srihari won silver while GM Mitrabha Guha took bronze. In the Blitz section GM Rohith Krishna claimed silver, while GM Srihari secured bronze. In the Classical section, GM Ranindu Liyanage won silver and GM Srihari took bronze.Players from several commonwealth countries, including Sri Lanka, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Mauritius, Maldives, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Kenya, Malaysia, Singapore, Scotland and Canada, competed in the event. The Open section featured 96 players.The tournament was organised by the Sri Lankan Chess Federation from May 16 to 26, and was attended by Sri Lankan ministers, officials of the Commonwealth Chess Association and delegates from participating countries.
