Mohali: A 27-year-old Mohali man allegedly died by suicide after jumping into a canal, with his family accusing his wife and in-laws of mental harassment. Police have registered a case against the wife and her parents and launched an investigation.The deceased, Rohit of TDI City, had married Payal, a resident of Nabha, in Feb. According to a complaint by his father Rakesh Kumar, Rohit was repeatedly pressured to live separately from his parents. The family alleged that Payal, who went to her parental home on May 14 after a bereavement, refused to return unless Rohit severed ties with his family.The ongoing dispute allegedly left him distressed.On May 31, Rohit left home and did not return. His motorcycle was later found near a canal at Tehna village near Sirhind, following which police launched a search operation. His body was recovered Friday and handed over to the family after post-mortem.Investigating Officer Burma Singh said chat records between Rohit and his wife have been submitted. Preliminary findings indicate pressure on him to live separately.A case has been registered under Section 108 of the BNS against Payal, her father Anil Kumar and her mother Sunita. Police said further action will depend on evidence gathered.
