Gujarat Election Result 2026 Live Updates: Highlights

Gujarat Local Body Election Results 2026:
The BJP delivered a sweeping victory in Gujarat’s local body elections, reinforcing its dominance across the state ahead of next year’s Assembly polls. The party won all 15 municipal corporations and 78 of the 84 municipalities, while also securing 33 of 34 district panchayats and 220 of 260 taluka panchayats.

In urban areas, the BJP maintained a complete hold, including in major cities such as Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara and Rajkot, while also marking its debut victory in nine newly formed municipal corporations like Vapi, Navsari and Gandhidham. Out of 1,044 seats across the 15 corporations, the BJP won an overwhelming majority, leaving the Congress and AAP far behind.

The party also dominated rural Gujarat, though the opposition managed limited breakthroughs. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) wrested the Narmada district panchayat and made gains in select tribal regions, while the Congress secured notable wins such as in Ahmedabad’s Khadia ward, ending decades of BJP dominance there.

AAP’s urban presence shrank significantly compared to its 2021 performance, particularly in Surat, while the Congress saw a decline in its overall tally across local bodies. Despite scattered gains by opposition parties, the results underline the BJP’s continued electoral supremacy across both cities and villages.

The elections, held across 9,200 seats with over 4.18 crore eligible voters, are being seen as a key indicator of voter sentiment ahead of the upcoming Gujarat Assembly elections.

Gujarat Election Results 2026 Live: ‘Did you vote’ robbers ask before storming house

Two men robbed an elderly couple at knifepoint in the Sama area on Monday afternoon after first asking the couple an unusual question — whether they had voted in the civic election.

The alleged crime occurred around 2pm at a bungalow in Santoshinagar Society, where 83-year-old T P Radhakrishnan lives with his wife. Police said the two men knocked on the door and when Radhakrishnan approached, one asked if he had voted in the election. Radhakrishnan said he does not have a voter ID and thus had not voted.

The men asked a few more questions, prompting Radhakrishnan to open the door. At that moment, the second man — who had partially covered his face with a cloth — stepped forward and the duo forced their way in.

According to Radhakrishnan's complaint, the men brandished a knife and warned him not to make a sound. When Radhakrishnan shouted for help, his wife rushed out of another room. The robbers threatened her as well and covered her mouth with a cloth.

The accused first removed the gold rings worn by the couple and then dragged them into the room that had their cupboard. They opened it and took with cash, jewellery and a bank locker key, along with the couple's mobile phones.

Gujarat Election Results 2026 Live: SIR shrinks voter rolls, lifts turnout to 51.8%

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls appears to have played a role in driving up voter turnout in the 2026 Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections.

While the number of people who voted stayed almost the same, the turnout percentage rose sharply by 9.3 points.

In 2021, 19.65 lakh votes were cast from a total voter base of 46.24 lakh, resulting in a turnout of 42.51%. In 2026, the number of votes polled increased only slightly to 19.69 lakh— just 3,172 more voters. However, turnout jumped to 51.81%, suggesting that the revised voter list reduced the overall base while keeping participation steady. The election was conducted using this updated ward-wise voter list prepared after the SIR.

A senior official from the Ahmedabad collectorate said, "On Sunday, an average voter turnout of 51.81% was recorded across 48 municipal wards. This is the highest turnout compared to the previous three elections held in 2010, 2015 and 2021."

The revised 2026 voter list showed a drop of 8.24 lakh voters compared to 2021 figures. A decline in voter numbers was seen in 45 of the 48 wards. However, Chandkheda, Nikol and Maktampura recorded an increase in registered voters. In 2021, the total number of registered voters stood at 46.24 lakh, with turnout at 42.51%.

Gujarat Election Results 2026 Live: Counting begins amid high-stakes political contest
Counting of votes for Gujarat’s extensive local body elections commenced at 9 am on Tuesday, marking a crucial phase in one of the state’s largest electoral exercises ahead of next year’s Assembly polls. Voting, held on Sunday, covered 15 municipal corporations, 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats and 260 taluka panchayats, with nearly 9,200 seats at stake and over 4.18 crore eligible voters. The elections are being closely watched as a barometer of public sentiment, with the ruling BJP, the Congress, the Aam Aadmi Party and AIMIM emerging as the principal contenders across regions.
The BJP reaffirmed its dominance in Gujarat’s political landscape with a sweeping victory in the 2026 local body elections, winning all 15 municipal corporations and 78 of the 84 municipalities. The party also delivered a near-clean sweep in rural bodies, securing 33 of 34 district panchayats and 220 of 260 taluka panchayats, underlining its control across both urban and rural regions.

In major cities, the BJP retained or expanded its hold in Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar, while also marking its debut in nine newly formed municipal corporations including Navsari, Vapi and Gandhidham. Of the 1,044 seats across the 15 corporations, the BJP won an overwhelming majority, leaving the Congress and AAP far behind.

Despite the BJP’s dominance, the opposition registered scattered but notable gains. The Aam Aadmi Party wrested the Narmada district panchayat and made inroads in tribal belts across south Gujarat and Saurashtra. The Congress, meanwhile, pulled off symbolic wins such as its victory in Ahmedabad’s Khadia ward, ending decades of BJP dominance.

While AAP’s urban presence shrank sharply compared to its 2021 performance in Surat, it compensated with improved rural gains. The Congress saw a dip in its overall tally compared to the previous cycle, particularly in taluka panchayats.

Overall, the results highlight the BJP’s continued electoral supremacy in Gujarat, while also indicating emerging pockets of resistance from AAP in tribal regions and isolated but significant breakthroughs by the Congress.
