Tamil Nadu Election Results 2026 Highlights: AIADMK rules out support for TVK in govt formation

Tamil Nadu Election Results 2026 Live Updates: Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has scripted a historic breakthrough in Tamil Nadu, emerging as the single largest party in the 234-member Assembly and triggering intense negotiations over government formation.

TVK secured 108 seats, falling just short of the majority mark by around 10 seats, setting the stage for coalition-building in a state long dominated by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).

With numbers not adding up independently, TVK has initiated talks with multiple parties. Congress, which won five seats, confirmed it has been approached for support. Congress general secretary K. C. Venugopal said the decision would be taken by the state unit, adding that the party remains committed to keeping the BJP “and its proxies” out of power in Tamil Nadu.

Other smaller parties — including PMK (4 seats), CPI, CPI(M), and VCK (two seats each)are also seen as potential allies.

At the same time, the AIADMK, which secured 47 seats, has indicated it is in talks with TVK. AIADMK MLA Leema Rose confirmed discussions between Vijay’s party and AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami.

The dual-track negotiations have made the final shape of the government uncertain. Political observers say TVK faces a strategic choice: align with Congress and smaller parties for a broad coalition, or opt for a numerically stronger but politically complex arrangement with the AIADMK.

The election result marks a major shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. Since 1967, the state has been ruled by either the DMK or the AIADMK or their alliances. Congress has not independently held power in the state in nearly six decades.

For Vijay, the mandate represents a dramatic rise from political newcomer to power contender. However, the coming days will test his ability to convert electoral momentum into a stable government.

As backchannel talks intensify, all eyes are now on who TVK chooses as its partner. Stay tuned for the latest developments.

Tamil Nadu election results: Gov Arlekar undecided on TVK's claim
Vijay, chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Wednesday and staked claim to form the government, following a significant political realignment in the state.

The move comes after the Indian National Congress extended support to TVK, snapping its pre-poll alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). The development marks a major shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape.

Two days after emerging as the single largest party and disrupting the long-standing dominance of the DMK and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), Vijay met the Governor at Lok Bhavan and submitted a list of Congress MLAs backing his claim.
However, sources at Lok Bhavan indicated that no final decision has been taken yet on inviting TVK to form the government or scheduling the swearing-in ceremony, suggesting that the Governor is not fully convinced about the party’s numbers.

Vijay, chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), is unlikely to take oath as Chief Minister on Thursday as the party continues efforts to secure the required majority in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, PTI sources said.

According to sources, TVK does not yet have the “official numbers” needed to stake a stable claim to form the government. The delay comes as the actor-turned-politician works to consolidate support from potential allies.

Sources added that R. N. Ravi is not fully convinced about the party’s current strength, which has further contributed to the uncertainty around the swearing-in timeline.

Tamil Nadu Election Results 2026: Congress extends 'conditional' support to Vijay’s TVK in Tamil Nadu
"The President of Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), Thiru C Vijay, has formally requested the Indian National Congress (INC) to extend its support for forming a government in Tamil Nadu. The people of Tamil Nadu, especially the youth, have delivered a very clear, strong and overwhelming verdict for a secular, progressive and welfarist government that believes in constitutional principles. They have chosen the Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) led by Mr. Vijay to form the next government.

The Indian National Congress stands for, and is the founding political party for, secular, progressive and welfarist politics in India. It is our constitutional duty to respect, uphold and help fulfil this mandate of the people of Tamil Nadu. Accordingly, the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and the Congress Legislative Party (CLP) has decided to extend its full support to the TVK to form the government.

Our support shall be conditional upon the TVK keeping out from this alliance any communal forces that do not believe in the Constitution of India.

This alliance between the TVK and the Tamil Nadu Congress will strive to bring back Perunthalaivar Kamaraj's glory days of Tamil Nadu, with a strong commitment to Thanthai Periyar's social justice ideals and Dr. BR Ambedkar's constitutional ideals in the years and decades to come.

Election Results 2026: Congress frames support to TVK as anti-BJP strategy
Senior Congress leader Manickam Tagore justified the party’s decision to back TVK as part of a broader anti-BJP strategy. He said the verdict reflected both anti-incumbency against the DMK and a rejection of BJP-led politics in Tamil Nadu. According to him, aligning with TVK is essential to prevent BJP from gaining a foothold in the state, framing the move as a strategic decision rather than a break from ideological commitments.

"The verdict has gone against the DMK government. Half the ministers in the Cabinet have lost their seats. We faced collateral damage for no fault of ours. Now, BJP is eyeing Tamil Nadu. The question before us is clear, should we stand with those rejected by the people's verdict, or should we unite with the force that fought against BJP and fight to stop BJP from ruling Tamil Nadu?" he posted on X.

Tamil Nadu results: Congress to extend support to TVK to form coalition government
Amid a fluid political situation in Tamil Nadu following the 2026 Assembly elections, the Congress is set to extend support to the Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which has emerged as the single largest party but fallen short of a majority.

In a key development, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal said: “Vijay had sought Congress’ support in Tamil Nadu,” adding that the party leadership had asked the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee to take a final call.

News agency ANI citing sources said the Tamil Nadu Congress has now unanimously decided to support TVK after a late-night virtual meeting chaired by TNCC President K Selvaperunthagai, where MLAs and senior leaders deliberated on the evolving political situation and the implications of aligning with the Vijay-led party.

TVK secured 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, 10 short of the majority mark, and is seeking support from smaller parties. Congress holds five seats, while PMK has four, and CPI, CPI(M), and VCK have two each — numbers that could prove crucial in government formation.

Tamil Nadu election: TVK stakes claim to form government in TN; Vijay seeks time from Guv to prove majority
With the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerging as the single-largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, party President C. Joseph Vijay on Tuesday formally staked claim to form the government in the state.

He has written to Governor Rajendra Arlekar seeking an appointment and requesting an opportunity to prove his majority on the floor of the House.

In his communication sent to the Lok Bhavan (earlier Raj Bhavan), Vijay stated that the party, which has secured 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, has received a clear mandate as the single-largest formation. He asserted that this position entitles TVK to be invited to form the next government in the state.

“We are the single largest party with 108 legislators and have the right to form the government. We request an opportunity to demonstrate our majority,” Vijay said in his message.

He also sought additional time to mobilise support and indicated that he would be able to prove his majority within 15 days.

The majority mark in the Tamil Nadu Assembly stands at 118, leaving TVK 10 seats short of a clear majority. This has triggered intense political activity, with the party expected to seek support from smaller parties and Independents in the coming days.

Sources in the Raj Bhavan indicated that the Governor is likely to invite Vijay to form the government shortly. Officials suggested that he may be granted a window ranging between seven and 15 days to prove his majority on the Assembly floor, a standard constitutional practice in cases where no party has secured an outright mandate.

Meanwhile, internal preparations within the party are underway. Vijay is set to be formally elected as the Legislature Party leader at a meeting of newly-elected TVK MLAs scheduled to be held at the party headquarters in Panaiyur later in the day.

This step is expected to complete the procedural requirements before government formation. The developments mark a significant moment in Tamil Nadu politics, with TVK’s rapid rise disrupting the state’s traditional political landscape and setting the stage for high-stakes negotiations in the days ahead.

MK Stalin to meet VCK, CPI leaders following dramatic political shift in Tamil Nadu
Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) President Thol Thirumavalavan, CPI(M) State Secretary Shanmugam, and Communist Party of India (CPI) State Secretary Veerapandian are set to meet Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Chief and Tamil Nadu outgoing Chief Minister MK Stalin at the DMK party office on Wednesday, a day after Tamilaga Vettri Kazagham (TVK) made a stellar debut in the Tamil Nadu assembly polls.

DMK chief Stalin arrived at the party's headquarters ahead of his meeting.

Tamil Nadu witnessed a dramatic political shift as TVK secured 107 seats in the 234-member Assembly in its debut election, falling just 11 seats short of the majority mark. While DMK secured 59 seats.

The party is now expected to seek support from smaller parties, including Congress, PMK, Left parties, CPI(M), and VCK, to form the government.

The election results also delivered a major upset in Kolathur, where DMK chief and outgoing Chief Minister MK Stalin lost to TVK's VS Babu by 8,795 votes. TVK also led the vote share with over 32 per cent, while the DMK secured 24.19 per cent and the AIADMK 21.22 per cent, marking a decline for both Dravidian majors.

Earlier in the day, Chief Minister Stalin expressed heartfelt gratitude to the people of the state who supported the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) alliance in the recently concluded legislative assembly elections, despite the party's defeat.

He thanked the voters, considering each vote as an invaluable token of trust.

He emphasised that the DMK alliance secured over 1.54 crore votes, with a narrow 3.52 per cent vote difference from the winning party.

In a post on X, CM Stalin wrote, "I express my heartfelt and sincere gratitude to all the people of Tamil Nadu who voted for the candidates of the secular progressive alliance led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in the recently concluded Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly general elections. I consider each and every one of your votes as an invaluable token of trust. According to the vote counts received so far, the DMK alliance has secured 1 crore 54 lakh 82 thousand 782 votes. I convey my heartfelt gratitude to all these people. The party that won additional constituencies has gained only 17.43 lakh more votes than us. The percentage difference in votes between us and them is just 3.52 percent. As far as I am concerned, I consider the trust that the people of Tamil Nadu have placed in us to be strong."

Tamil Nadu election result: All but two women from TVK bite the dust in Chennai
Chennai : An eight-monthpregnant M R Pallavi, 36, and J Kamatchi , 44, who contested as TVK’s candidates in Thiru Vi Ka Nagar and Pallavaram respectively, are the only two women who emerged victorious in the city. Both are first-time contestants, and they won by huge margins of 22,333 and 54,693, respectively.

A total of 53 women candidates represented the electorate, of whom 20 were Independent candidates. Of the 33 women candidates from recognised political parties, DMK fielded two, AIADMK three, TVK two, and BJP one. NTK had fielded 12.

TVK members said Pallavi’s persistence during campaign struck a chord with voters. Despite being in the final stages of pregnancy, she continued door-to-door outreach in peak summer. “I will start working from today. My constituency is backward and requires a lot of work. I see it as an opportunity given by God to serve people,” she said.

TVK youth wing secretary J Karthick, who worked with her, said, “This is a deserved win for Akka (elder sister). She struggled to walk and fainted from dehydration once. When we went to ask for votes, many residents offered juice and advised her to stay at home. But her determination has earned her this win,” he said.
Among women candidates who lost in the city were veterans such as former Telangana and Puducherry governor Tamilisai Soundararajan from BJP, and former ministers Gokula Indira and B Valarmathi from AIADMK. New candidates, such as A P Poornima and R S Kiruthika Devi, both doctors, from DMK, and Porkodi Armstrong, lawyer and wife of slain BSP leader Armstrong, lost.

Tamilisai congratulated the winners and said this election can be considered as both a‘Vijay wave’ as well as a DMK anti-incumbency wave. “This setback will not affect my public service and voicing concerns. I accept people’s decision,” she said.

A fierce political row has erupted in Tamil Nadu after the Congress signalled support to Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) accusing its long-time ally of “backstabbing” the mandate.

TVK, which emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats, is short of a majority and has reached out to multiple parties for support. The Congress, with five MLAs, confirmed that it is considering backing Vijay’s bid to form the government.

The move has drawn sharp criticism from the DMK. Party spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai alleged that Congress had betrayed both the alliance and the people.

“They have backstabbed the people of Tamil Nadu… even before the ink on the returning officer’s signature dried, they chose to go ahead with an alliance,” he said.

Annadurai pointed out that the Congress had been supported by the DMK leadership, including chief minister M. K. Stalin, who had projected Congress leader Rahul Gandhi at the national level. He questioned the arithmetic behind the move, noting that Congress’s five MLAs would not be sufficient to ensure stability for the TVK government.

“They need at least 11 to 12 MLAs. What difference will five make?” he asked, accusing the Congress of “self-destructing” for limited political gains.

The controversy has been further complicated by parallel talks between TVK and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), which has 47 seats. AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami is reportedly in discussions with TVK, raising questions about which alliance Vijay will ultimately choose.

The results have upended Tamil Nadu’s traditional political order, delivering a shock defeat to the DMK and pushing the AIADMK to third place. Since 1967, power in the state has alternated between these two Dravidian majors or their fronts.

For Vijay, the breakthrough is unprecedented, but the path to power remains uncertain. With competing offers and rising political tensions, the formation of the next government has turned into a high-stakes battle — one that could redefine alliances in Tamil Nadu.
