Election Results 2026 Live Updates: 'Ball is in Vijay's court,' says AIADMK leader Kovai Sathyan

Election Results 2026 Live Updates: Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA secured a massive victory in West Bengal, Assam and Puducherry. TVK swept Tamil Nadu and UDF made a massive comeback in Kerala.

Counting of votes are still under way across West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Kerala and Puducherry. The Election Commission of India is yet to release official figures.

BJP pushes ahead in Bengal and Assam
Early trends from the Assembly election results indicated major political shifts across eastern and southern India, with the BJP emerging as a dominant force in West Bengal and Assam. In West Bengal, the BJP was leading in 109 seats, well ahead of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), which was ahead in 63 constituencies according to Election Commission trends. The contest remained the centrepiece of Election 2026, marked by fierce campaigning over issues such as electoral rolls, alleged rigging and political polarisation.

Security remained tight across Bengal, with more than 2.5 lakh Central Armed Police Force personnel deployed alongside state police. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari expressed confidence that the party would form the government, while the TMC leadership remained cautious as counting continued. In neighbouring Assam, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma led the BJP to a commanding position, with the party ahead in 74 of the state’s 126 seats, while Congress trailed far behind at 23.

Vijay’s TVK stuns Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu delivered one of the biggest surprises of the election, with actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) making a dramatic electoral debut. The party was leading in 103 seats, putting it ahead of both the AIADMK and the ruling DMK. The AIADMK was ahead in 67 seats, while the DMK slipped to third place with 38 seats, pointing to a major political churn in the state’s Dravidian landscape.

Congress gains ground in Kerala, NDA leads in Puducherry
Kerala offered a boost for the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), which surged ahead in the counting trends. Congress was leading in 61 seats, while the CPI(M) and CPI were ahead in 29 and nine seats respectively. KPCC president Sunny Joseph described the trends as evidence of a strong pro-UDF wave. In Puducherry, the contest remained fragmented, with Congress and BJP tied at two seats each, while the All India NR Congress was leading in seven constituencies.

"The ball is in Mr Vijay's court, and he has to take a conscious decision," said AIADMK National Spokesperson Kovai Sathyan, on being asked if his party will support TVK in gaining majority

"The ball is in Mr Vijay's court, and he has to take a conscious decision whether he wants to complete the 5-year term or try to do some exercises of taking many more parties into confidence. The Governor has asked for clarity on the number of MLAs in the TVK camp. Developments are happening."

Tamil Nadu polls: DMK spokesperson on TVK-Congress alliance
On TVK to form government in Tamil Nadu in alliance with Congress, DMK spokesperson T K S Elangovan said, “Right from the beginning, there were talks that some people wanted to support Vijay and join his party. They are doing something which will close their party.”

Tamil Nadu polls: 'Foolhardy decision,' DMK slams Congress for backing TVK
On Congress's decision to support TVK, DMK spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai said, "In 2016, the Congress got a good number of seats, though it was not proportionate to the seats that were allocated to them. The BJP-RSS was mocking Rahul Gandhi, calling him names. At that time, our leader, MK Stalin, made Rahul Gandhi the prime ministerial candidate, which was a bold move. From then onwards, Rahul Gandhi's graph rose in 2024... It is all the hard work of the DMK on the ground, the resources of the DMK party on the ground, and that is why they were able to pull off these five seats. I call this a foolhardy decision. The TVK, of course, needs 11 seats to cross the majority mark. The AIADMK, with 47 seats, is willing to offer unconditional support. If you are Vijay, to whom will you listen? Someone with five seats or someone with 43 seats? So the Congress, I think, had made a very bad decision. Just to satisfy a few egos, and they will regret it immediately..."

Election Results 2026: EC directs security officials to ensure 'zero tolerance' toward post-poll violence in West Bengal

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has issued a stern directive to the West Bengal Chief Secretary (CS), Director General of Police (DGP), and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) to ensure 'zero tolerance' toward any incidents of post-poll violence in the state.

The ECI directive came after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) office in Asansol's Godhuli area was allegedly vandalised on Monday after the BJP recorded a historic win in the assembly elections.

Unknown miscreants vandalised the TMC office, leaving the premises heavily damaged, with furniture, flags, posters and banners torn down.

This is the second alleged incident of vandalism of the TMC office.

Earlier in the day, the TMC office in the Dumurjala area of Howrah was allegedly vandalised, escalating the already intense political atmosphere in West Bengal. The incident scene shows broken windows, torn posters, and scattered furniture, with the TMC flag thrown onto the road.

This act of vandalism follows a series of violent incidents between TMC and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters in the state, highlighting the increasing political hostility ahead of the final election results.

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)'s MLA-elect, VS Babu, who defeated the outgoing CM MK Stalin in Kolathur constituency, attributed the victory to party chief Vijay and a local connection.

Touching upon the anti-incumbency factor, VS Babu said that his win came in the backdrop of people's desire for change in Tamil Nadu.

He told ANI on Tuesday, "I have won only with our leader. Our leader's face is the face of Tamil Nadu. People wanted a change, and they have changed this. I was born and brought up in that area. We know the pulse of people. It's we who made him (MK Stalin) enter Kolathur. He doesn't know anyone in Kolathur. Whether he is CM or MLA, he should mingle with the local people first. People are watching it."

MK Stalin had lost his stronghold of Kolathur to VS Babu of the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). In a closely watched contest, Babu secured victory by a margin of 8,795 votes on Monday.

Elections result 2026: Big win empowers BJP to recast Assam politics, delivering welfare pledges key to retaining power
Buoyed by a sweeping mandate in Assam, the BJP is expected to intensify its Hindutva agenda in the state—a shift that observers believe may further marginalise Assamese regionalist politics. At the same time, many voters attribute the party’s decisive victory to its welfare-driven approach.

The NDA is poised to form the government for a third consecutive term, securing a two-thirds majority with a record 102 seats in the 126-member Assembly. The BJP alone won 82 of the 90 constituencies it contested, while its allies—the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP)—won 10 seats each. Notably, this marks the first time the BJP has achieved a majority independently in Assam.

Political analyst Brojen Deka suggests the result aligns with the party’s positioning as a defender of Hindu interests, alongside its projection as a protector of Assamese identity. However, this dominance appears to have weakened regionalist forces, including both established and emerging parties.

Deka also warned that sections of the Muslim population, particularly Bengali-speaking communities, may feel increasingly marginalised. Meanwhile, the limited performance of parties claiming to represent these groups indicates shifting political alignments.

Welfare schemes, particularly those involving direct financial transfers, played a crucial role in influencing voters. Yet, sustaining these commitments may strain the state’s finances. Should delivery fall short, public dissatisfaction could rise, potentially eroding the government’s popularity.

The recent state poll results underline the return of anti-incumbency, showing that prolonged rule still breeds dissatisfaction unless countered by effective governance. Leaders like Mamata Banerjee, MK Stalin, and Pinarayi Vijayan faced backlash over corruption, crime, and governance failures, while Himanta Biswa Sarma’s success highlighted the value of delivery and strong messaging.

A significant trend was the consolidation of Hindu votes, reshaping electoral dynamics across states, alongside a narrowing political space for Muslim-focused outreach. Narendra Modi’s continued popularity proved decisive, helping the BJP overcome organisational gaps. Electoral roll revisions and improved voting conditions also influenced outcomes.
