Popular Indian actor Kamal Haasan launched the Makkal Needhi Maiam party on February 21, 2018. Haasan set out on a march from Tamil Nadu's Rameswaram and launch the political party in Madurai later on the same day. Haasan shared the stage with Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal, who was the chief guest of the event, as he announced his party’s name.

The name of the party can be roughly translated to People's Justice Centre. Elaborating on his party's ideology later, Haasan said the party could not be bracketed as left or right but would draw the best from all ideologies. While launching the party, he promised to devote the rest of his life to the people.

The flag of the party has a white background with six hands joined together and shades of red over three hands and the rest in white. A star can be seen in the center, surrounded by a star-like background in black.
