Delhi Election Results 2025 Live Updates: ECI completes Delhi assembly poll process, submits results to LG

Election Results 2025: The BJP is on track to form a government in Delhi for the first time in over 26 years, with data from the Election Commission indicating the party is leading in 47 out of the 70 assembly seats, while AAP is ahead in 23.

Delhi's political landscape witnessed a dramatic showdown on February 5 as millions of residents headed to polling stations to decide the fate of their city's government.

The electoral battle, whose results are set to be unveiled today, has shaped up to be one of the most intensely contested, with the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) fighting to retain power against a resurgent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while the Congress party seeks to break its decade-long losing streak in the capital.

The Election Commission reported a moderate turnout of 60.42 percent across Delhi's 70 constituencies, with interesting geographical variations. North East Delhi emerged as the most politically active district, recording a robust 66.25 percent voter participation, while South East Delhi showed relatively lesser enthusiasm with 56.16 per cent turnout.

The election features several heavyweight candidates across key constituencies, including AAP's Arvind Kejriwal and BJP's Parvesh Verma battling it out in New Delhi, while constituencies like Kalkaji witness a three-way contest between AAP's Atishi, BJP's Ramesh Bidhuri, and Congress's Alka Lamba. Other prominent faces include AAP's Manish Sisodia in Jangpura and BJP's Kapil Mishra in Karawal Nagar.

Delhi Assembly Election Results 2025 Live: 'PM Modi resides in heart of Delhi', says Nadda on Delhi poll results
BJP president J P Nadda on Saturday hailed the party's victory in the Delhi Assembly polls as a "historic moment," asserting that the results send a clear message that Prime Minister Narendra Modi holds a strong place in the hearts of Delhiites.

Speaking at an event at the BJP headquarters to celebrate the party's success, Nadda launched a scathing attack on the AAP, branding it a "factory of lies and corruption." He claimed that the outcome of the elections signaled the people's refusal to "tolerate this AAP-da" any longer.

"It's a historic moment," Nadda reiterated, emphasizing that the BJP's triumph in Delhi following the Lok Sabha elections reaffirmed Modi's deep connect with the capital.

Taking a swipe at the Congress without directly naming it, Nadda mocked its electoral performance, remarking that the party had consistently maintained a "zero" score in Delhi since 2014, whether in assembly or Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP chief further stated that the mandate was an "endorsement" of Modi's "politics of development and report card," underscoring public trust in the prime minister's governance.

PM Modi criticizes AAP after Delhi poll defeat, cites Anna Hazare's allegations
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday reacted to the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections, referencing Anna Hazare's long-standing criticism of the party's alleged involvement in corruption. Modi remarked that Hazare, who led the movement against corruption, must have felt relief after the AAP's loss, calling it a victory against those who betrayed the people of Delhi.

He pointed out that AAP, once formed as an anti-corruption party, had descended into scandal, with key leaders facing corruption charges. Modi specifically highlighted the liquor scam and the party’s controversial spending on projects like the "Sheesh Mahal" during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier, Hazare expressed disappointment over AAP's tarnished image due to its involvement in corruption, which he believes led to a decline in voter support. He also reiterated his belief that political candidates should possess strong character and integrity, a value he felt AAP had abandoned.

The BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats in Delhi, reclaiming power after 27 years, while AAP’s tally fell sharply to just 22, a significant drop from their 2020 performance.

AAP's Amit Palekar suggests alliance with Congress could have swung Delhi results
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Goa President Amit Palekar expressed regret on Saturday over his party's performance in the Delhi Assembly elections, suggesting that a possible alliance between AAP and Congress could have altered the outcome. Despite the party’s unexpected defeat, Palekar acknowledged the results as the people's verdict but pointed to the narrow margins in certain constituencies where a combined effort could have proven advantageous.

Speaking to reporters, Palekar reflected on the thin margin of loss in several Delhi constituencies and said, "If Congress and AAP had fought together, it would have helped." He admitted that his party had underestimated key factors in the campaign, including the role of anti-incumbency.

“We accept the majority verdict in favour of BJP,” Palekar said, emphasizing that despite the loss, the AAP remains committed to serving the people of Delhi. On social media, Palekar added that the results, while shocking, have only motivated the party further. “The difference of 2 percent between BJP and AAP indicates that the party retains its position in the heart of the people,” he wrote on X.

Palekar went on to express gratitude to the party’s supporters, stating that AAP’s commitment to "honest politics" will continue across India, including Goa, under the leadership of Arvind Kejriwal. While AAP secured 22 seats in the 70-member Delhi Assembly, the BJP emerged victorious with 48 seats, and Congress failed to win any.

The BJP’s win marked its return to power in Delhi after over 26 years.

BJP's chief ministerial race heats up after historic victory in Delhi
The speculation surrounding the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) choice for Delhi's Chief Minister grew significantly on Saturday after the party made a triumphant return to power in the national capital, securing 48 out of the 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly. With this victory, which ended a 26-year drought, several BJP leaders have emerged as potential candidates for the top post.

One of the leading figures in the race is Pravesh Verma, whose remarkable victory over AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal in New Delhi by a margin of 4,089 votes has greatly increased his stature within the party. His success has positioned him as a strong contender for the Chief Minister’s role in the upcoming BJP-led government.

BJP leaders have also identified several other experienced individuals as potential chief ministerial picks. Ashish Sood, who won from Janakpuri with a margin of 18,766 votes, is among the senior leaders who could be considered for the position. Sood’s administrative experience, particularly in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation, has earned him recognition, and he currently serves as the BJP’s in-charge for Goa and co-in-charge for Jammu and Kashmir.

Another frontrunner, Pawan Sharma, secured a victory from Uttam Nagar by a commanding 29,740 votes. He is also the BJP's co-in-charge for Assam and is seen as a serious contender for the top post.

Former Delhi BJP Presidents Vijender Gupta and Satish Upadhyay are also in the race. Gupta, a three-time winner from Rohini, had previously served as the leader of opposition in the Delhi Assembly. Upadhyay, who defeated AAP's Somnath Bharti by a narrow margin, has strong ties with the RSS leadership and is currently co-in-charge for BJP’s Madhya Pradesh unit.

There is also speculation that the BJP’s national leadership may consider a woman leader for the Chief Minister position. Rekha Gupta, who won from Shalimar Bagh by over 29,000 votes, and Shikha Rai, who triumphed over AAP's Saurabh Bharadwaj in Greater Kailash, are among the prominent female leaders who could be in the running.

BJP's victory in Delhi assembly polls: "Historic moment," says JP Nadda
BJP President J.P. Nadda on Saturday described the party’s victory in the Delhi Assembly elections as a "historic moment," emphasizing that it marks a decisive message that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is deeply embedded in the hearts of Delhiites. Addressing an event at the BJP headquarters, Nadda praised the election results, calling them a resounding rejection of AAP and its leadership.

"It’s a historic moment," Nadda said, adding that the BJP’s triumph following the Lok Sabha elections is a clear indication of the capital’s unwavering support for Prime Minister Modi’s leadership. He also noted that the victory reflects the people’s endorsement of Modi’s "politics of development."

Nadda took aim at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), branding it a "factory of lies and corruption." He further remarked, "The people of Delhi have refused to tolerate this AAP-da any more." In a scathing attack, he accused the AAP of betraying the public’s trust, with its leaders—once seen as champions of honesty—now embroiled in corruption scandals. "‘Kattar imandaar’ (outright honest) turned out to be such a ‘kattar bhrashtachari’ (outright corrupt)," Nadda said, referencing the legal troubles of AAP leaders including Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia.

Nadda also mocked the Congress for its continuous failure in Delhi elections, implying that it had been consistent in securing "zero" results since 2014.

In his speech, Nadda reassured Delhi residents that the BJP would fulfill all promises made during the campaign and ensure the city’s progress, drawing comparisons to BJP-led states’ advancements. He also cited the AAP's failures in governance, accusing the party of mismanaging public services, from supplying dirty water to neglecting education.

"The poll results are a befitting reply to ‘kattar beiman’ AAP and its leaders," Nadda concluded, asserting that Delhi now seeks a government focused on development and integrity.

Election Results 2025 Live: The rise & fall of AAP - How 'broom' was swept 'in and out' of Delhi
Ten years ago, a new wave of politics took shape in India as the people of New Delhi experienced a surge of hope from the historic Ram Lila Maidan. What began as a movement against corruption under the leadership of Anna Hazare and his protégé Arvind Kejriwal soon transformed into a political force that would challenge the established political landscape.

In 2011, when the ruling Congress government was embroiled in multiple corruption scandals, the Ram Lila Maidan protests became a symbol of resistance. At the heart of the movement was the demand for the Jan Lokpal Bill, which aimed at strengthening anti-corruption measures. As the Congress-led UPA government sought to suppress the protests by deploying police forces, the move backfired, garnering widespread national sympathy and weakening the government’s position.

Realizing the limitations of their apolitical stance and their lack of legislative power, Kejriwal and his team decided to take the plunge into the political arena. On October 2, 2012, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was born — marking a new chapter in Indian politics, coinciding with Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary. Read full story

Delhi Assembly Election Results 2025 Live: Kumar Vishwas comments on Delhi election results, 'This is only the first defeat'
Amid the Delhi Assembly election results, former AAP leader and poet Kumar Vishwas took to social media, congratulating the BJP and praising the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for their "micro-level management" in securing a significant victory. Vishwas acknowledged the role of the BJP in shaping India's political landscape, attributing the party’s success to strategic leadership and meticulous planning.

Reflecting on the political journey of India over the past 13 years, Vishwas described a wave of "political renaissance" that had the potential to bring about positive change. However, he claimed that the downfall of this wave was caused by "a shameless man, a self-absorbed, insecure person who acted like Duryodhan." While he didn’t name the individual, the reference to "Duryodhan" pointed to the political figure he holds responsible for the derailment of progress.

Vishwas concluded by emphasizing that the defeat witnessed in Delhi is only the "first defeat," hinting at future struggles ahead. His comments come amidst growing tensions within the opposition, especially after AAP’s defeat and Congress' poor showing in the elections.

Election Results 2025 Live: As the Delhi government navigates through multiple litigations with the Lieutenant Governor (LG), it finds itself at a crossroads in the Supreme Court, with key petitions challenging the Centre’s 2023 law that grants the LG sweeping powers in controlling services in the national capital. These ongoing cases, particularly the contentious GNCTD Act, 2023, could reshape the governance landscape in Delhi, especially with the BJP poised to form the next government.

The legal battle comes in the wake of the Centre’s decision to centralize control over administrative services, empowering the LG with authority over crucial decisions. A significant petition challenges the Centre's law that establishes the pre-eminence of the LG in Delhi's administrative affairs, including the authority to appoint government lawyers. This landmark case could set a precedent for how governance is structured in Delhi moving forward.

Key legal struggles

Among the Delhi government’s active petitions, one pertains to the appointment of the chairperson of the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC). The Delhi government has also filed cases challenging the LG’s interference with schemes like sending teachers abroad for training and the reactivation of the Farishte scheme, which provides emergency services.

Perhaps most striking is the case against the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), in which the LG’s role is under scrutiny due to illegal tree felling in the Delhi Ridge area. The cases, which reflect the growing tension between the elected AAP government and the appointed LG, have taken on heightened significance amid the larger constitutional dispute.

A new chapter with BJP in power?

As the BJP is set to take control in Delhi, the outcome of these cases in the Supreme Court will be pivotal. The shifting political landscape raises questions about how these ongoing legal battles will unfold. Will the BJP-led government maintain the same stance as the outgoing AAP administration in challenging the LG’s influence, or will they seek a resolution?

The legal drama dates back to May 2023 when the Centre introduced the Delhi Services Bill, which places administrative control over services under the LG’s purview. The bill, cleared by Parliament and signed into law by President Droupadi Murmu, followed a tumultuous period marked by disputes between the Delhi government and the Centre.

Supreme Court’s role and future implications

The Supreme Court had previously referred a crucial petition regarding the Centre's May 2023 ordinance to a five-judge bench, marking a turning point in the long-standing power struggle. The ordinance removed the Delhi government’s control over services and created an authority for posting and transferring Group-A officers in Delhi, among other territories. The new law places the LG in a dominant position, with decisions made by a majority vote within a newly formed authority, and in cases of disagreement, the LG's decision is final.

The AAP government has fiercely opposed the law, calling it a "deception" and a violation of the principle of collective responsibility. They argue that the law undermines the autonomy of an elected government, a stance supported by the Supreme Court in a prior ruling which had emphasized the need for elected officials to have control over bureaucrats.

As these legal proceedings continue, all eyes will be on the Supreme Court's verdict, which could either reinforce the balance of power between Delhi’s elected leaders and the appointed LG, or further tilt the scales in favor of centralized control. What happens next could dramatically alter the governance structure in India’s capital and provide a template for other states with similar power struggles.
