Real Madrid have reportedly agreed a deal to bring back legendary manager Jose Mourinho as head coach on a two-year contract. The Portuguese tactician is expected to replace Alvaro Arbeloa after a disappointing season for the Spanish giants. An official announcement is likely to come after Madrid’s final La Liga match against Athletic Club on Sunday. Mourinho is then expected to be presented at the Santiago Bernabeu next week.
The move comes after a difficult campaign for Real Madrid, who ended the season without winning a major trophy. Reports suggest club president Florentino Perez believes Mourinho is the right manager to restore discipline and stability inside the dressing room. Internal tensions reportedly increased after an argument between Aurelien Tchouameni and Fede Valverde before El Clasico, adding more pressure on the coaching staff.
Jose Mourinho set for emotional return to Real Madrid
Jose Mourinho will return to Real Madrid 13 years after leaving the club in 2013. During his first spell, he helped Real Madrid win the La Liga title in the 2011/12 season with a record-breaking 100 points. He also guided the club to Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana triumphs during his three-year stay.
The 63-year-old recently completed the season with Benfica. His side finished third in Liga Portugal after a strong unbeaten league campaign. However, Benfica narrowly missed out on the league title. Mourinho reportedly has a release clause worth £2.6 million in the contract he signed only eight months ago.
According to reports by Sky Sports, Mourinho will bring four members of his coaching staff from Benfica to Madrid. His long-time agent Jorge Mendes is believed to have handled negotiations directly with Perez.
Several top names, including Jurgen Klopp, Mauricio Pochettino and Didier Deschamps, were linked with the Real Madrid job in recent months. However, Perez reportedly decided Mourinho’s experience and strong personality made him the ideal choice to lead the club through a difficult period.
Notably, there has been a lot of buzz around the player’s internal disputes with Alvaro Arbeloa. From
Kylian Mbappe to Dani Ceballos there have been evident fallouts with the manager.
Moreover, Madrid’s heavy defeat to Barcelona in El Clasico is believed to have accelerated the club’s decision. Mourinho will now aim to bring success back to the Bernabeu and rebuild confidence inside one of Europe’s biggest clubs.
