South Africa struggled with the ball, showing glimpses of brilliance but failing to maintain consistency. Lungi Ngidi was the pick of the lot with his 3 wickets. Overall, they were unable to apply sustained pressure on the Kiwi batters, ultimately conceding 110 runs in the final 10 overs - a phase that might come back to haunt them. However, with everything at stake, the Proteas cannot be counted out just yet. They have a history of pulling off record-breaking chases and will need a solid start to keep their hopes alive. Rachin Ravindra, the centurion, is up for a quick chat. He says that it was all about building partnerships. Adds that he wasn’t timing the ball quite well early on, but the experience of Kane helped him from the other end. Adds that the balls are skidding on the surface quite a bit but the bowlers of South Africa were good with those length-balls. Mentions that Kane is a very calm person, and when he bats, he just wants to give his full focus on the batting. States that he enjoys batting with him. Further adds that bowling those cutters will be crucial as Lungi Ngidi showed in the first inning.

Just when South Africa seemed to pull back some momentum, Daryl Mitchell played a crucial hand, contributing a solid 49, helping New Zealand cross the 300-run mark. The final push came from Glenn Phillips, who initially struggled for timing but then exploded with four consecutive boundaries, injecting late momentum into the innings. He went on a rampage, smashing an unbeaten 49 off 27 balls, ensuring the Kiwis finished with a commanding 362 runs on the board.

Rachin unleashed a counterattack, and from that moment, it was one-way traffic. Both batters scored fluently, rotating strike efficiently while ensuring minimal risks. Their 164-run stand laid the perfect platform, with Rachin registering a well-deserved century before Kagiso Rabada finally broke the partnership. With Rachin gone, Kane shifted gears, reaching his own century but falling shortly after, preventing him from taking the game even deeper.

Opting to bat first, the Kiwis got off to a measured start, carefully negotiating the initial pace burst from Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen, who relentlessly hit the deck hard and bowled short. However, once the openers adjusted, they started capitalizing on scoring opportunities. Lungi Ngidi’s clever use of pace variations provided South Africa with the first breakthrough, dismissing Will Young. Kane Williamson then joined Rachin Ravindra, and while the latter struggled for strike initially in the partnership, the duo remained composed, weathering a brief period where South Africa managed to build some pressure with dots.
