Matthew Breetzke is up for a chat and he admits that his record-breaking debut innings hasn’t fully sunk in yet, though he feels exhausted and wants to take in the moment. He acknowledges that batting was tricky early on, with the wicket being a bit tacky and O’Rourke extracting movement with the new ball. Breetzke focused on spending time at the crease before growing in confidence and eventually enjoying his innings. Looking ahead, he hopes South Africa can strike early with the new ball to put New Zealand under pressure and see how the game unfolds.

At the other end, Mulder played a crucial supporting role, notching up 64 off 60 balls, ensuring South Africa breached the 300-run mark. His knock ended in the penultimate over, falling to O’Rourke, but his contribution had already bolstered the total. For New Zealand, Matt Henry was the standout bowler, returning figures of 2/59 from his 10 overs. O’Rourke also picked up two wickets, while Bracewell chipped in with one, but overall, the bowlers struggled to contain the Proteas' late surge.

After winning the toss, New Zealand elected to bowl first, looking to make early inroads. While Matthew Breetzke started cautiously, Temba Bavuma took the initiative in the powerplay, scoring 20 off 23 balls before O’Rourke found his glove, sending him back early. The Kiwi spinners tightened the screws, slowing down the run rate and forcing South Africa into a rebuilding phase. However, Breetzke and Wiaan Mulder showed great composure, grinding through the middle overs before shifting gears. Their 131-run stand for the fourth wicket was a game-changing moment, with Breetzke stamping his authority on the game.
