BAN vs PAK, 2nd Test Highlights: Mohammad Rizwan 94 goes in vain as Bangladesh cleansweep the Test series 2-0

BAN vs PAK, 2nd Test Highlights: Bangladesh completed a historic 2-0 Test series whitewash with a comprehensive 78-run victory on Day 5 of the second Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.
This marks Bangladesh's first clean sweep in a Test series against Pakistan at home and second overall, after their 2-0 win in Pakistan back in 2024.

Chasing a mammoth fourth-innings target of 437 runs, Pakistan put up a spirited resistance but were eventually bowled out for 358. Left-arm spinner Taijul was the architect of the final-day demolition, running through the Pakistani batting lineup to seal a memorable victory for the hosts. He claimed bowling figures of 6/120 in 34.2 overs.

Opting to bowl first, Pakistan conceded 278 runs in the first innings courtesy of a brilliant counter-attacking 126 from Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das.

In response, Pakistan stuttered as they were bundled out for 232 despite a brisk 68 runs off 84 balls from Babar Azam. Bangladesh speedster Nahid Rana and Taijul Islam picked three wickets apiece to hand Bangladesh a crucial 46-run first-innings cushion.

Bangladesh batted Pakistan out of the game in the third innings, posting a massive 390 on the board. Veteran Mushfiqur Rahim anchored the innings with a masterful 137 off 233 balls while Litton Das continued his good form with a fluent 69, setting Pakistan a massive target of 437.

Pakistan's run chase was built around a gritty 92-run sixth-wicket partnership between skipper Shan Masood (71) and Babar Azam (47) for the third wicket and then a 134-run stand between Agha and Mohammad Rizwan (94).

Despite the resistance from the Pakistan batters, Bangladesh spin proved dominant as Taijul Islam claimed wickets of Azam and Masood and then dismantled the tail, finishing the match with a match-defining six-wicket haul.

Following their commanding 104-run victory in the opening Test at Dhaka, this 78-run triumph in Sylhet ensures Najmul Hossain Shanto's side registers a landmark consecutive Test series sweep against Pakistan after their 2-0 win over Pakistan back in 2024.

All set for action to begin on Day 4 in Sylhet. The conditions are pretty muggy, with the sun peeking out. The two umpires walk out to the middle and the players of Bangladesh take their spots on the field as well. Both the Pakistani openers, Azan Awais and Abdullah Fazal, walk out to the crease. Taskin Ahmed has the ball in hand and there are a couple of slips and a gully in place. Awais will face. Let's play...

09:28 (IST) May 19

PITCH REPORT - Athar Ali Khan is inspecting the conditions in Sylhet. He says the surface has been good throughout and should hold up well into this final session. The big question, he notes, is whether Pakistan can create history. Says a chase of this magnitude has never been achieved at this ground, and this is the highest target Pakistan have ever been set here. On Bangladesh's bowling strategy, he points to the final two overs before the break as a masterclass in length control. Of the 12 deliveries bowled, he details, nine or ten hit the perfect good-length mark, completely shutting down the scoring options. That, he says, is brilliant Test match bowling, and exactly the discipline Bangladesh will be looking to replicate from here. Adds that for Pakistan, all eyes are on Babar Azam. He points that it has been 31 innings without a Test century for him, which means the pressure is firmly on him, yet his class is beyond question. Further adds that as he gets his eye in, he has every ability to master this surface and post a big one, much as Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das did earlier in the match. Adds that a chase of this magnitude demands someone to stand up and anchor the innings, someone cut from the cloth of a Younis Khan or a Mohammad Yousuf. Ends by saying whether Pakistan have that steel in them today remains to be seen.

09:28 (IST) May 19

Pakistan's star batter - Babar Azam, on the mood in the dressing room, says the feeling is good, and the focus is simply on doing their best. He acknowledges that the target is big, but two full days remain to chase it down. On the approach, he says big partnerships are the key. Adds that the openers need to lay the foundation and the batters coming in after must build on it. On his form, he says he has always been confident, and runs in the middle only add to that. He is happy with how he is batting. On the pitch, he feels it is still pretty good. Details that there is a little spin, but on the whole, it is a nice surface to bat on.

09:26 (IST) May 19

A word from the coach - Phil Simmons, the Head Coach of Bangladesh, on being asked whether on the previous day, Day 3, they were in any mood to declare innings, smiles and replies that he or his skipper had no intention to declare the innings. Adds that they had it planned that they are going to bat as much as they can. On the pitch, he calls it a really good surface, pointing to the Zimbabwe match at the same venue, where it stayed even throughout. He stresses that bowlers still have to work hard and hit the right areas because it is fundamentally a good batting wicket, and yesterday proved that batters who apply themselves can score freely here. On the dressing room mood, he says confidence is naturally high right now. Mentions that wins breed confidence, and when players are scoring hundreds, it rises even further. Says these are exactly the things the team has been working towards, and they are now starting to arrive consistently.

09:01 (IST) May 19

About the pitch - Ahead of Day 3, Mahmudul Hasan Joy had mentioned in a pre-match interview that the ball was coming nicely onto the bat during his stint, making him feel comfortable at the crease. Now, looking at Bangladesh's batting performance on Day 3 can only reinforce the assessment that there are no demons on this pitch. However, with the new ball in hand and two inexperienced young openers at the crease, the hosts possess more than enough firepower to make early inroads. Stay tuned as the fourth day begins shortly.

08:41 (IST) May 19

Patience the key for Pakistan - A fifth day is not out of the question! Why? Because once a batter gets settled on this surface, it will become increasingly difficult to dislodge them, at least the Bangladeshi batters have displayed that resilience. Pakistan will need tremendous heart, patience, and composure to mount any kind of realistic challenge. And the likes of Babar and Rizwan will have to bat their hearts out. Bangladesh, however, will arrive this morning with the scent of history in the air. With their bowlers well rested, their confidence sky high, and an entire nation watching, the Tigers will be eager to wrap things up swiftly and assert their dominance on home turf without question.

08:37 (IST) May 19

Pakistan face a mountain - Khurram Shahzad was Pakistan's standout performer with four wickets, and the visitors managed to negotiate two overs under fading light before the umpires called stumps. Azan Awais and Abdullah Fazal, the opening pair, walked off unbeaten but also without opening their account, already staring down the enormity of what lies ahead. Pakistan have a herculean task ahead, and they will have to contend with hostile spells from the pace trio of Bangladesh, as well as the relentless spin of Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan Miraz on a Sylhet surface that is deteriorating by the hour.

08:32 (IST) May 19

Greetings folks - Welcome to what promises to be a riveting Day 4 of the second Test. Day 3 was an absolute masterclass for Bangladesh, who were utterly dominant with the bat. The Moving Day belonged emphatically to the Tigers, headlined by Mushfiqur Rahim's magnificent 137 off 233 balls, they stretched their second-innings total to 390 and set Pakistan a mountainous target of 437 runs to win. Half-centuries from Litton Das and Mahmudul Hasan Joy further underlined Bangladesh's commanding display, as session after session slipped away from the Pakistan bowling attack that fought hard but simply could not turn the tide.

08:30 (IST) May 19

... DAY 4, SESSION 1 ...

16:56 (IST) May 18

All to play for on Day 4 - Day 3, which is generally known as the moving day in Test cricket, has flown by and at the end of it, Bangladesh are well ahead in the game. Even the two overs they bowled late in the day almost turned out to be fruitful as Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam had the Pakistan openers chasing for the ball. Pakistan will be pleased to get out of Day 3 unscathed and will look to put on a sturdy batting display, and truth be told, the pitch doesn't seem to have any demons on it, and if the visitors can make the most of the first two sessions on Day 4, we could be in for a exciting run chase. Do join us on Tuesday, the 19th of May at 4 am GMT for the start of Day 4. However, you can also tune in sooner for our build-up. Cheers!

16:53 (IST) May 18

A tale of two teams - Bangladesh have had the upper hand with the ball, given their well-rounded bowling attack, but they have put on a fine display with the bat as well in their second innings. Scoring 390 runs in the third innings of the Test match, when neither of the first two innings saw a score of above 300 runs, is pretty solid. Pakistan, on the other hand, made changes to their bowling attack for this game and it hasn't quite worked out as intended. Their batting is already pretty inexperienced, and they will be hoping that at least one of their young opening batters goes on to score big in the fourth innings.

16:49 (IST) May 18

The hosts in a promising position - Bangladesh are in prime position to sweep the two-match Test series, and Pakistan have it all to do on Day 4 and maybe even on Day 5. Still, 437 runs needed for the win, and the visitors have all 10 wickets in hand. All in all, Day 3 also belonged to Bangladesh and they will be hoping to make quick inroads with the ball on Day 4.

16:45 (IST) May 18

There's a discussion going on between the two umpires. The artificial lights have been on for a bit, and now it seems like the umpires are calling the players off. Bad Light stops play and a reading is taken. Najmul Hossain Shanto was about to introduce Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the off-spinner, due to the fading light, but it has now been confirmed that it is STUMPS on DAY 3.

BAN vs PAK, 2nd Test Highlights: Bangladesh national cricket team completed a historic 2-0 Test series whitewash over Pakistan national cricket team after securing a 78-run victory in the second Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium. Bangladesh recovered from an early collapse in the first innings thanks to a brilliant century from Litton Das before bowling Pakistan out for just over 230 to gain a crucial lead. Mushfiqur Rahim then starred with 137 in the second innings, helping Bangladesh set a massive 437-run target.

Pakistan fought hard in the chase through captain Shan Masood, Babar Azam, Salman Ali Agha and a heroic 94 from Mohammad Rizwan, but Bangladesh spinner Taijul Islam produced a match-winning spell, finishing with six wickets in the innings and nine in the match. Bangladesh eventually bowled Pakistan out for 358 on Day 5 to complete a dominant series sweep.
