Rajasthan Assembly Elections 2023

The assembly election for 200-member Rajasthan, initially set for November 23, has been postponed to November 25, with the vote counting still scheduled for December 3. This decision was taken after concerns were raised about the extensive weddings and social events planned in Rajasthan on the original election date, which could have inconvenienced a large number of people, created logistical issues, and potentially reduced voter turnout. The counting of votes for the Rajasthan assembly polls will proceed as planned on December 3, along with the counting for four other state assembly elections. In the 2023 assembly elections, Rajasthan is expected to witness a closely contested battle between the ruling Indian National Congress (INC) and opposition Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). In the last three assembly elections in Rajasthan, the incumbent party has lost the poll. In 2008, Congress won with 96 seats, taking the help of other parties to cross the majority mark, while BJP secured 78. In 2013 elections, BJP removed the Congress government by claiming 163 seats out of 200. Congress won only 21 seats. In the 2018 Rajasthan elections, the anti-incumbency sentiment was evident, leading to the defeat of the incumbent BJP government led by then-chief minister Vasundhara Raje. Congress, under the joint leadership of Ashok Gehlot and Sachin Pilot, secured victory with 100 out of the 200 seats, while Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) was limited to 79 constituencies. Additionally, 13 Independent candidates, six from Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), three from the Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP), two from Communist Party of India (Marxist), one from Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), and two from the Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) emerged victorious.
