Madhya Pradesh Assembly Elections 2023

Madhya Pradesh, which goes to polls on November 17, will witness a direct contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC). Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is a part of the opposition alliance INDIA, is also contesting the MP elections in full strength. The saffron party is currently in power in Madhya Pradesh with Shivraj Singh Chouhan as the chief minister. In 2018, the Congress won the Madhya Pradesh elections, but lost power to the BJP in March 2020 after 22 MLAs, including Jyotiraditya Scindia, resigned and defected to the saffron party. With the collapse of the Kamal Nath government, Shivraj took oath as the state chief minister in March 2020. Scindia joined the BJP along with his loyalists. In 2018, Shivraj emerged victorious from Budhni constituency by defeating Congress leader Arun Yadav by a margin of 58,999 votes. He had won the seat in 2013 as well. Shivraj, the longest-serving chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, will once again contest from his home turf Budhni - a seat he has represented fives since 1990. BJP, which has been in power in MP since 2003 except for 18 months between 2018 & 2020, is once again seeking to emerge victorious. The Shivraj-led government faces anti-incumbency and infighting but BJP is banking on various developmental works and welfare measures launched in the state. The grand old party too is hoping to return to power in Madhya Pradesh as the election is being seen as the semi-final before the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Out of 5.60 crore voters in Madhya Pradesh, 2.88 crore are men and 2.72 crore women. Of them, 22.36 lakh are first-time voters. A total of 64,523 polling stations have been set up in urban and rural areas of the state.
