Meerut: A 55-year-old Delhi-based doctor and his daughter were killed while five people, including a toddler, were injured when their car entering the Ganga Expressway collided with a Mercedes in Sambhal district on Tuesday. Police said, prima facie, both the vehicles were “travelling at high speed”.Sambhal circle officer (CO), Kuldeep Kumar, said, “A hatchback (Volkswagen Polo) driven by Dr Arvind Kumar of Hari Nagar in West Delhi apparently made an ‘unauthorised’ entry into the e-way. A Mercedes with three persons -- a Noida-based businessman, his son and their driver -- travelling from Noida to Lucknow failed to notice the hatchback and collided with it, killing the doctor and his daughter Yamini, 31.”The accident took place around 7am near Sambhal’s Khirni village under Kaila Devi police station limits. The hatchback veered off the e-way after the collision and both the vehicles were badly damaged. Apart from Arvind and Yamini, the doctor’s wife Mona and another daughter Priya and her one-and-a-half-year-old child Sucharita were in the vehicle. All three suffered critical injuries.According to police, Arvind had come to Chandausi with his family on Monday, and the next morning, he was returning to Delhi with them.
The Noida businessman and his son in the Mercedes also suffered serious injuries. He is a resident of Noida Sector 112, police said.“We are now probing how the hatchback entered the e-way and travelled in the wrong direction without being noticed. The Mercedes driver has been detained for questioning and further investigation is underway. No complaint has been received so far,” added CO Kumar.Dr Vishnu Hari Upadhyay, managing director of Bhagwan Dattatray Hospital in Sambhal, told TOI: “Arvind was going to Delhi with his family to drop his daughter at the airport. Her flight was scheduled for Ahmedabad, where she is married. His elder daughter, who died, was unmarried. His wife and granddaughter are currently critical at a hospital in Delhi.”
