Madurai: Madurai’s first integrated stormwater drainage project is expected to temporarily affect the livelihoods of 108 families during construction around the three high-priority hotspots -- Meenakshi Amman Temple, South Masi Street and Periyar bus stand. The project’s social impact assessment found that 98 shopowners and 10 roadside vendors could face temporary income loss when drains are built and existing networks desilted.Corporation officials said measures will be taken to minimise disruption to businesses during construction. Access to all 98 shops will be maintained throughout the project period. “The 10 roadside vendors identified in the survey will be permitted to shift temporarily to the non-working side of the road so that business activities can continue,” said an official. However, the report also said no private land acquisition is required as all work is planned within road margins. It also found no need for physical relocation or permanent economic displacement. Eligible affected shopkeepers would be entitled to compensation and assistance around ₹9 lakh under the social management framework adopted for the project.
