Kolhapur: A homeopath and a private person, allegedly acting as an agent, were arrested by the Kolhapur police for allegedly carrying out sex determination and termination of pregnancy. After they were produced before the Kagal court, the police got their custody for three days.
The police have identified the homeopath as Yuvraj Patil, and the agent as Sambhaji Shinde.
The district police and the health department had received complaints about sex determination and illegal abortion at a set-up in Bidri. The police then used a decoy — a four-month pregnant woman — to verify the complaint. The woman and other people posing as her relatives went to the homeopath.
They were allegedly asked to pay Rs 22,000 for the process.
A police team, led by assistant inspector Kranti Patil, then carried out a search of the premises. The team seized a portable sonography machine, medications used for abortion and cash. The premises from which Patil and Shinde were operating was registered in the name of another medical practitioner.
"The arrested homeopath has other cases registered against him for
illegal sex determination. One at the Radhanagari police station, another at the Bhudargad police station and a private complaint registered before the first class judicial magistrate Kagal," said assistant inspector Patil.
According to the police, the homeopath was out on bail in the previous cases.
