Haryana tops country in state GST growth, records 22% rise in May collections
Chandigarh: Haryana has emerged as the top-performing state in the country in terms of state GST revenue growth for May 2026, registering a 22% increase over the corresponding month last year. The state significantly outperformed the national average growth rate of 6% during the period.According to official data, Haryana's net state GST collection (post-settlement) stood at Rs 4,456 crore in May 2026, an increase of Rs 807 crore compared to Rs 3,649 crore collected in May 2025. Meghalaya, Karnataka and Gujarat followed Haryana with growth rates of 19%, 17% and 16%, respectively. The state has also secured the first position in cumulative state GST revenue growth during the first two months of the financial year 2026-27. Haryana recorded a 40% increase in GST collections during April-May compared to the corresponding period of the previous financial year, well above the national average of 23%. Officials said Haryana has consistently maintained strong growth in GST revenue. During the previous financial year 2025-26, the state also recorded the highest growth rate of 22% against the national average of 6%.The sustained rise in GST collections has been attributed to Haryana's expanding economy and efficient tax administration. The excise and taxation department has intensified data analytics-based enforcement, launched drives against fake taxpayers, strengthened compliance measures and taken steps to plug revenue leakages. To make tax administration more taxpayer-friendly, the department has also started sending show-cause notices and summary orders through registered and speed post, in addition to making them available online, in line with the chief minister's Budget 2026-27 announcement.
