Hisar: A 28-year-old man, suspected of involvement in drug trafficking, died under mysterious circumstances within hours of a police raid in Hansi on Wednesday, triggering allegations of custodial misconduct from his family and a counterclaim from the police that he succumbed to a suspected heroin overdose.
Kuldeep, a resident of Jagdish Colony in Hansi, was taken into custody during a police operation Wednesday afternoon. Family members alleged that a team of police personnel picked him up from his residence around 3:30 pm and later informed them to take him away. They subsequently learned that he was admitted to a private hospital in Hisar, where doctors declared him dead.
Kuldeep's relatives, including his uncles Ramphal and Balbir and brother Bhupendra, claimed that when they reached the hospital, doctors informed them that he was brought there by police personnel and was already dead.
They maintained that no visible injury marks were found on his body and demanded a fair inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The police, however, offered a different version of events. According to Vinod Kumar, the superintendent of police, Kuldeep consumed a substantial quantity of heroin while being questioned during an anti-narcotics operation.
The police said approximately 6-7 grams of heroin were seized from Kuldeep's possession and an FIR under the NDPS Act was registered against him at Hansi City police station.
Officials stated that after his condition deteriorated, he was initially taken to a hospital in Hansi and later referred to a medical facility in Hisar, where he died during treatment.
The police maintained that the exact cause of death would be established only after the post-mortem examination report was received.
The incident has raised serious questions, with family members seeking accountability while authorities await forensic and medical findings to determine the circumstances that led to Kuldeep's death.
