AMRITSAR: The officiating Jathedar of the Akal Takht, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, has urged Sikhs living abroad to maintain strong ties with Punjab and their cultural heritage.
Addressing a gathering on the 42nd anniversary of
Operation Blue Star, the military operation carried out at the Golden Temple complex in 1984, Giani Gargaj stressed the importance of ensuring that younger generations remain connected to their roots, traditions and values.
He appealed to overseas Sikhs not to distance themselves permanently from Punjab and to avoid selling their ancestral land, describing it as an important part of their identity and legacy.
Emphasising the need to preserve these connections, Giani Gargaj said a strong bond with one's roots would help the community face future challenges and protect its cultural, religious and social heritage.
“Remaining connected to our roots is of utmost importance. We must strengthen these bonds to effectively confront the significant challenges that lie ahead,” he said.
The anniversary of Operation Blue Star was observed at the Akal Takht in the Golden Temple complex amid heightened emotions, pro-Khalistan slogans and extensive security arrangements across the city.
Earlier, the bhog of an Akhand Path was performed at the Akal Takht. However, the atmosphere became tense following Giani Gargaj's address.
Several hardline groups supporting the demand for a separate Sikh state,
Khalistan, raised pro-Khalistan slogans. Many participants were seen carrying posters supporting Khalistan and waving swords while chanting “Khalistan Zindabad” slogans.
The officiating Jathedar also criticised the proposed Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Act, 2026, alleging that attempts were being made to bring Sikh religious institutions and traditions under greater legal control. He argued that such measures could weaken established Sikh institutions and traditions.
On the occasion, SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami, officiating Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, and Takht Sri Damdama Sahib Jathedar Giani Tek Singh honoured family members of those who were killed during Operation Blue Star.
Speaking at the event, Dhami said that 42 years ago, on the martyrdom anniversary of Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the then Congress government ordered military action against Sikh shrines. He said Sikh fighters responded with courage and sacrifice, while many innocent pilgrims, women and elderly devotees also lost their lives.
