Ahmedabad: Allegations of illegal activities at the NHL Medical College hostels in Ahmedabad have surfaced, with members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) submitting a representation to the college dean demanding immediate removal of the hostel warden and rector. The members presented evidence, including videos showing liquor bottles found in dustbins outside hostel rooms.
According to the representation, liquor was allegedly being supplied in both boys’ and girls’ hostels, and unauthorized individuals - former students or outsiders were being allowed to stay in hostel rooms in exchange for bribes ranging from Rs 8,000 to Rs 10,000. ABVP activists claimed that some officials were involved.
Dean Dr Cheriben Shah stated that no such complaints had been received earlier. She said the authenticity of the video showing liquor bottles needs to be verified. The dean also mentioned that some individuals staying beyond the permitted period have already been issued notices and removed. Additionally, a committee has been formed to investigate the matter, and appropriate action will be taken based on its report.
The issue of installing air conditioners and coolers in hostel rooms was also raised. While such facilities are not officially permitted, it has been alleged that they were being provided in exchange for bribes. Reports suggest that security officials earlier raised concerns in writing about restricted items being allowed into the hostel under verbal instructions from influential individuals.
ABVP has demanded strict action, including a detailed probe, removal of responsible officials, and filing of a police complaint. The incident has raised serious concerns about administration and discipline within the hostel premises.
