It was the first time they were voting and the capital’s youngest voters came out in large numbers, determined to make it count. Saroj Paswan, a 20-yearold who toils in a steel factory and lives in a slum cluster, wanted better living conditions. “I hope we get a pucca makaan (concrete house),” said Paswan, the Machhli Bazar resident who voted at the DSIIDC Leather Complex polling station of Model Town.

From providing tokens and seats to voters to all-women and all-disabled teams managing polling stations-—there were several special and model polling stations set up by the Election Commission this assembly polls. While there were a total of 70 ‘pink’ stations with waiting areas, creches and first-aid rooms, the west Delhi constituency had some ‘special’ stations.

Seelampur in northeast Delhi witnessed the highest voter turnout with 71.4% eligible voters turning up. According to Delhi election officials, Mustafabad came a close second with 70.55%. The two Muslim-dominated assembly constituencies in northeast Delhi were among the five that had witnessed high turnouts in the 2015 assembly election as well. While 71.8% voters had cast their votes in Seelampur in 2015, Mustafabad had witnessed a 70.9% voter turnout with Gokalpuri recording the highest voter turnout of 74.2% followed by Seemapuri with 73.3%.

The turnout in Delhi for the assembly election fell short of its record in 2015 when AAP had bagged 67 seats out of 70. It was a sunny Saturday but voting was sluggish till afternoon. According to the latest figure available with the EC, which is subject to revision, the turnout stood at 61.5%, against 67.1% in 2015 when AAP recorded a spectacular victory.

Delhi recorded 61.46 per cent voter turnout on Saturday, down from 67.47 per cent in 2015 assembly election, with exit polls predicting an easy win for AAP, which sought to retain power on development plank, against the BJP that ran an aggressive campaign centred around the issues of anti-CAA protests and nationalism.

Senior AAP leader and deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia on Saturday said the party is winning the Delhi assembly elections by a huge margin after exit polls forecast a comfortable victory for the ruling party.

Free electricity and water, development, jobs, national security and CAA were among the issues on the mind of many Delhiities when they cast their vote on Saturday.
