"Ignored for too long": NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s Twitch debut sparks buzz as mayor targets Gen Z audiences
Zohran Mamdani has launched a new Twitch livestream series called “Talk with the People” to answer New Yorkers’ questions live. The stream will also air on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, and Bluesky, but Twitch remains the main hub for viewer interaction. Mamdani said the goal is to connect City Hall directly with younger audiences who feel ignored by traditional politics and media platforms.
Zohran Mamdani is taking a very different approach to public communication, and it is happening on a platform more commonly associated with gamers and livestream creators than city politics. The New York City mayor officially launched a new Twitch-based livestream series designed to answer questions from residents in real time, marking one of the boldest social media experiments by a major American politician in recent years. The new series, titled “Talk with the People,” debuted on May 21 and instantly drew attention online. While the livestream is also available across YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, and Bluesky, Twitch will serve as the primary platform where viewers can interact directly with Mamdani through live chat questions. The move reflects how aggressively the mayor’s office is targeting younger audiences who rarely engage with traditional political coverage.

Zohran Mamdani uses Twitch to reshape political communication

Long before entering City Hall, Mamdani built much of his public image through digital-first campaigning and highly shareable online videos. That background is clearly shaping how he plans to govern. In a statement shared with Polygon, Mamdani explained why he believes livestreaming can bridge the growing gap between younger voters and local government.
“With the launch of ‘Talk with the People’ we’re bringing City Hall to the platforms where New Yorkers already are — speaking directly with the people,” Mamdani said.
“By launching the country’s first recurring cross-platform stream hosted by an elected official, where I’ll answer New Yorkers’ questions live on Twitch, we’re opening up a direct line of conversation between our government and the people, especially younger generations who’ve been ignored for too long.”That strategy feels carefully calculated. Political leaders have increasingly embraced podcasts and short-form video, but a recurring Twitch livestream pushes the idea much further. Unlike pre-recorded interviews or scripted appearances, livestreaming creates immediate reactions, unpredictable moments, and direct engagement from viewers. It also places Mamdani inside the same digital ecosystem dominated by creators like Kai Cenat, xQc, and IShowSpeed, all of whom regularly pull millions of interactions online.

NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani leans into internet culture

The title of the livestream itself carries historical significance. “Talk with the People” references former New York City mayor Fiorello La Guardia and his 1940s radio program “Talk to the People,” which similarly used then-modern technology to connect with citizens directly.Even before the stream officially launched, Mamdani’s Twitch channel began rapidly gaining followers. The mayor has already shown a strong interest in gaming and online communities during his early months in office. Recently, he publicly congratulated a team of elementary school students after they won the 2026 Mayor’s Cup Battle of the Boroughs Minecraft Tournament. That mix of politics, internet culture, and livestream interaction is unusual for a major city mayor. But in a media environment where younger audiences consume news through creators and live platforms instead of cable television, Mamdani appears determined to meet voters where they already spend their time.Whether the strategy reshapes political communication long term remains unclear. What is obvious, though, is that City Hall’s newest microphone now comes with a Twitch chat attached to it.
