"We... identified yesterday simultaneous and coordinated attacks between Iran and Hezbollah, simultaneous missile launching from both Iran and Lebanon in an attempt to overwhelm our aerial defence systems," military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani told journalists.
Two loud explosions were heard in eastern Tehran on Friday, AFP journalists reported, in an area of the Iranian capital that has frequently been targeted in strikes by the United States and Israel during their campaign.
A journalist heard the blasts at around 6pm local time (1430 GMT) and saw two large plumes of black smoke rising in the eastern part of the city, while a third, smaller cloud was visible on the horizon. It was not immediately clear what had been hit. The Shargh daily reported that fighter jets had been circling the area.
The US energy secretary said the US Navy could begin escorting vessels through the Strait of Hormuz “as soon as it’s reasonable,” as traffic through the crucial shipping route remains severely restricted amid the US-Israel conflict with Iran.
"As soon as it's reasonable to do it, we'll escort ships through the straits and get the energy moving again," Chris Wright told US broadcaster Fox News's "Fox and Friends" show.
"This is due to the (Israeli) army's deployment of military vehicles and armoured personnel carriers in open areas, using these areas as military deployment points," it said.
"So far only the bases of the United States and Israel and separatist groups in the region have been targeted," the Mehr news agency reported, quoting a letter by Iran's defence council. It warned that if "the continued presence, plotting and entry" of militants into Iran is allowed, "all facilities of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq ... will be widely targeted."
The Israeli military said that it had struck a Hezbollah command centre and a drone storage facility in a “broad-scale wave of strikes” carried out overnight in Beirut’s southern suburbs. The bombardment followed an evacuation warning issued by the Israeli army for the densely populated area, a stronghold of the Iran-backed Hezbollah and home to hundreds of thousands of residents, prompting many people to flee in panic.
"As part of the strikes, an executive council's command centre and a facility storing UAVs (drones) utilised by Hezbollah for conducting attacks against the State of Israel were struck," the Israeli military said in a statement.
"Over the past few hours, various types of destructive drones of the Army's ground forces have targeted American military bases in Kuwait in large numbers. These attacks will continue in the coming hours," the army said, according to Iranian state TV, AFP reported.
"An oil tanker vessel owned by the United States near the borders of Kuwait has been targeted and is burning," AFP quoted Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesman for the military's central headquarters, saying, according to state TV.
US officials said that three American MQ-9 Reaper drones were brought down. It is not clear exactly where the drones crashed, though one of them attempted to go down off the coast of Iran. Officials also said it remains unclear how the drones were downed or who was responsible. In a separate incident, another MQ-9 Reaper was shot down in recent days in what officials believe was friendly fire from Qatari forces, CBS News reported.
