Facing rising fuel costs and LPG shortages, IIT Bombay has pioneered a sustainable approach by converting dry leaf waste into cooking fuel. Through a patented biomass gasification system, the institute now powers its campus kitchens efficiently while reducing reliance on conventional energy sources. Launched in 2014 under Professor Sanjay Mahajani from the Chemical Engineering Department, the project also tackles the disposal of massive quantities of fallen leaves across the green campus. The process transforms leaves into compressed pellets, which are then burned in a specially designed gasification unit, producing minimal emissions. Mahajani noted that direct burning creates high particulate matter, but this innovative system safely harnesses the leaves’ energy for cooking and thermal needs, promoting self-reliance and environmental sustainability on campus.
