Harish Rawat

Harish Chandra Singh Rawat is the ex-chief minister of Uttarakhand. He became the chief minister in 2014 but during President’s Rule in 2016 he had to vacate office, but he resumed after the end of the floor Assembly test in May 2016.

On March 11, Congress under the leadership of Harish Rawat lost 2017 Assembly Elections to BJP. He was also defeated from the two seats (Haridwar Rural and Kichcha) from which he contested.

As a member of the 15th Lok Sabha, Rawat served as the Union Minister of Water Resources in the cabinet under Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh (2012-2014).

He also worked as Minister of State at the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Food Processing Industries (2011-2012) and Ministry of Labour and Employment (2009-2011).

Rawat was unanimously elected as the President of Uttarakhand Congress Committee in the year 2000 and remained in the tenure until replaced by Yashpal Arya.

In 2002, he was elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of Indian parliament.

Harish Rawat became the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand by winning a by-election from Dharchula assembly by over 19,000 votes, in 2014. He succeeded Vijay Bahuguna who resigned due to criticism in handling rehabilitation after June 2013 floods in the state.

In March 2016, nine Congress MLAs rebelled against Rawat, reducing the Congress-led government and imposing President’s rule in the state. The CBI summoned Rawat over the horse-trading sting. Rawat faced immense criticism when a sting video was released in which he allegedly tried to bribe all nine rebel Congress MLAs in his favour, offering them Rs 5 crore each.
