Pokémon Champions release set for April 8: Cross-platform play, mega evolutions, and new starter pack perks
PC: Nintendo
The Pokémon series is getting a new game called Pokémon Champions. According to the official website Pokemon, it arrives on Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 on April 8, 2026. There’s also a Starter Pack bundle that includes the game and some extra benefits like more Pokémon storage and an extra battle track. Nintendo Switch 2 players get a free update for better graphics. A mobile version is coming soon. It will let players battle across devices. Cross-platform play seems to be a key feature here, enhancing accessibility, expanding competitive opportunities, encouraging wider community interaction, and allowing seamless gameplay experiences across consoles, handheld devices, and smartphones globally.

Pokémon Champions battle mechanics and cross-device competition

Pokémon Champions focuses on battles. The game uses familiar mechanics: Pokémon types, moves, and Abilities. Players can take part in Ranked Battles or Casual Battles. Ranked matches are for climbing the ladder. Casual matches are more relaxed. The mechanics are mostly the same as past Pokémon titles. Still, Mega Evolutions and some new Abilities add fresh options. Battles might feel slightly different because of these tweaks.
The mobile version connects with Nintendo Switch. Players on different devices can face each other. This reportedly opens up matchmaking. The pool of opponents will be bigger and more varied. Cross-platform play allows players to challenge friends and rivals, no matter the device.

Pokémon Champions strategy: Mega Evolutions and Pokémon HOME support

Pokémon Champions works with Pokémon HOME. You can bring in certain Pokémon from past games and from Pokémon GO. Not every Pokémon can transfer. Transferred Pokémon can be used in battles on Switch and mobile. Some Pokémon return from Pokémon Legends: Z-A with Mega Evolutions. Mega Meganium has the Ability Mega Sol, which makes moves act as if harsh sunlight is active. Mega Emboar keeps Mold Breaker, letting moves ignore the opponent’s Ability. Mega Feraligatr introduces Dragonize, changing Normal-type moves to Dragon-type and boosting power by 20%. These abilities reportedly add new layers to strategy.

Pokémon Champions Nintendo Switch 2 update and starter pack features

Nintendo Switch 2 players can download a free update for sharper graphics. The Starter Pack bundle gives extra Pokémon storage and a new battle song. These perks enhance the experience without altering battles. Players on the original Switch will still get the base game.
