Yordan Alvarez scared Houston fans on Monday, September 15, 2025, in Houston, Texas. The Astros star hurt his left ankle in the first inning against the Texas Rangers. He slipped as he stepped on home plate and rolled his ankle. He limped off the field with help from teammates and trainers. The Astros later said it was a left ankle sprain. Manager Joe Espada told reporters that Alvarez will have an MRI on Tuesday.

The play happened in the first inning at Minute Maid Park. Alvarez was on first base. Carlos Correa hit a ball into the infield. Rangers pitcher Jack Leiter made a bad throw. The mistake let Alvarez run all the way home.
As Yordan Alvarez touched the plate, his foot slipped. His ankle turned sharply.
He stumbled toward the dugout in pain. Christian Walker, standing near the on-deck circle, rushed to help him. Trainers and manager Joe Espada joined them. They walked Alvarez down the steps into the clubhouse.
Rookie Zach Cole came in for Alvarez. Cole gave the Astros a spark. He hit a two-run home run and later added an RBI single. His effort helped Houston beat the Rangers 6-3.
Espada said, “It didn’t look good on the field. We hope the MRI gives us better news.”
Alvarez did not talk to the media after the game.
Yordan Alvarez hurt again as Astros chase playoffs
The injury was tough timing for Alvarez. He had just returned on August 26, 2025. Earlier, he missed over 100 games with a right-hand fracture. Since his comeback, he had been swinging well. He was hitting .369 in 18 games, with big hits that lifted the Astros’ lineup.
Now, the team faces more questions. The Astros are one game behind the Seattle Mariners in the AL West. They also hold a two-game lead over the Rangers in the Wild Card race. Their next six games are against those same two rivals.
