It was a big day for Jannik Sinner, but behind his win, there was also an emotional story. The Italian star defeated Carlos Alcaraz in the Monte-Carlo Masters final on Sunday, April 12, 2026. He won in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-3, and lifted his first major title on clay. But while fans saw his father and girlfriend cheering in the stands, one important person was missing his mother, Siglinde. After the match, Sinner shared the reason, and it showed the kind of support he gets from his family, even when they are not physically there.

Jannik Sinner explains why his mother Siglinde missed Monte-Carlo final during Carlos Alcaraz clash

After the win, Sinner spoke honestly about his mother’s absence. He said she was not feeling well the night before and also on the day of the final. Even though she wanted to sit in his box, she chose to stay away.“My mom wasn’t there because she didn’t feel well last night and today too. She wanted to be in the box but in the end she said that it was better for her to be outside.”That decision turned into a quiet sacrifice. She stayed away so she would not feel uncomfortable during the match, and in a way, it helped Sinner stay focused. The result showed on the court. He played with control, handled pressure well in the first set tiebreak, and then took charge in the second.
This win also capped off a strong run for the Italian. He came into the tournament with confidence after good performances at Indian Wells and Miami. In Monte-Carlo, he started with a solid win over Ugo Humbert. Then he fought through a tough three-set match against Tomas Machac. After that, he beat Felix Auger-Aliassime and Alexander Zverev before facing Alcaraz in the final. Looking back at his week, Sinner said he was happy with how he improved step by step.“Yes, amazing week. Some great great matches from my side. So very, very happy. I tried to increase my level match after match which I’ve done. So I’m very happy about that and winning my first big title on this surface means also a lot to me. So yeah it was an incredible week.” He also admitted that even he did not expect things to go this well.“I am surprised in a very good way and it of course means a lot to me. I guess I still need a little bit of time to realize what’s happened.” With this win, Sinner moved back to World No.1, going past Alcaraz. His next stop will be the Madrid Open later this month.
